PostSubject: Is there a shortage?   Sun Sep 29, 2013 8:52 pm

As a kid, I remember going to Garage sales with my Gramps, and seeing BOXES of old dirty pipes... They were laying around all over. I'm not sure if it's because of the years that have gone by, or if it's because I'm actually looking for them, but they are no where to be found. I went to an Antique show today, with over 400 vendors, and literally saw 6 maybe 7 pipes after browsing for 6 hours. The only one worth buying was a Savinelli that was beat to hell, almost passed the refurbish stage, and it was 60 bucks... (The girl found a nice set of Pyrex bowls to add to her collection). You just never see pipes anymore at garage sales or Antique shops. I've gotten lucky, and found a few at some shops, but there are usually only a few Grabows, and some brands which I've never heard of. I want to get my hands on some pipes that I can practice refurbishing, but I want the finished project to be worth something to me. I got lucky just a few days back, and picked up a Peterson Churchwarden for 25 bucks, but that's the best I've gotten. Anyone have some good/bad luck at these types of locations? Anyone know where all the pipes are going? Just frustrated I didn't see a darn thing today...
Zach

Zach, The only advice I can give you is if it's says antiques on the sign your going to spend more money than you think/should
Go to flea markets, garage sales and auctions, rarely will you find that old gem everyone else over looked, but you can still find some decent pipes for not too much dollar

Flea Prey's given a million scroungers the false impression that old pipes are worth big bucks.

Fleamarkets over here. Nothing to write home about though, some really beaten up and you have to look far and wide to find something decent.

So true. And when and if you do run across a box of old pipes there may be 1 or 2 out of a hundred that are worth restoring. At least that's been my experience. When eBay started some 16 or so years ago there were about 2,000 pipes listed on any given day. Today there are an average of approximately 30,000 items in the same category of estate pipes. Amazing.

Yeah, and half of them are brand new import POS's
Sellers and eBay are cutting their own throats nowadays raising costs and prices.
I've been buying and selling on eBay since 2003 and nowadays they see very little of me because of it.

A while ago at the dumping station I noticed a guy throwing out a large box of pipes, some unsmoked still boxed, and offered to buy them. He was cleaning out a relatives house and I was lectured on the evils of smoking as he tossed them into the crusher. I suspect it's the fate of plenty after their owners pass.

Tell me you were able to get the pipes and stop the uneducated from destroying the precious briar.

I've developed a strategy to deal with these "do-gooders". When they start to lecture me about the dangers of smoking I begin to lecture them on the dangers of lecturing a pipe smoker.

I've had a couple of encounters with folks like that and if I'm outside and not on their property, I reach for a pipe in my pocket,(I usually have one on me and my trusty tobac pouch) if I'm not already smoking one, atenetitively listen as I fill my pipe and make sure when I light it I blow smoke their way as I mumble agreement thru my clenched bit with them. Then I take my pipe out of my mouth and give 'em an "eat s**t " grin! Makes their day !! Twisted Evil
