Well being new to this still. I decided to get some grade 2 blocks from Vermont Freehand. This way I can practice and learn this hobby a little cheaper. Well I started this one and it was so much fun from beginning to end. The grain ain't as nice as a better grade block, but I knew it wasn't going to be. I work 65 to 80 hours most weeks, so 30 minutes of fun a day working on a pipe really helps me out. I hope the next one is as much fun as this one. Any critiques are welcomed. And thanks so much fer looking.

Time well spent, I would say. I don't usually care for freehands, but I kind of like this one. There's nothing wrong with the grain; it looks comparable to some old Charatans and Upshalls I have.

Nice job for a number one !

That said, the usual (and expected) first pipe problems, since you asked :

1) Keeping the lines flowing from the bowl out to the button.
Looks OK in the second (angled) picture, but in the first one,
there's a bit of a collision where the shank meets the stem.

2) Button's too big & lumpy. Study some of your other ones.

3) The sharp, clean edges at the top want to be mirrored by
similarly sharp, clean edges at the stem saddle.

FWIW Wink

Thanks fer looking and commenting. Yak, you have a good eye. Thanks fer the critique. When I was polishing the stem I got a bit carried away and the lines on the saddle did get a bit rounded. I didn't think it would make a big difference but now that you brought it to my attention I can see what you mean. I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around how much to take off the button. I actually took more off this one. I'll continue to work on that. Thanks.

Yak's eye with a pipe is better than mine. Sometimes I get too simple and I either just "like it" or I don't.

This one I like. The overall attitude is phenomenal. The swept-back kind of poise is perfect. Though Yak's specifics, once I read them, deserve some detail-analysis, and are spot-on. Many times, with all art, getting the thing finished is almost the same as never being finished...that's the key of the true artisan and his craft, realizing the balance between the two (but, of course, eventually finishing, if possible).

Believe me, I know that just as well as anyone that I love you 's a craft or an art form enough to participate in it.

Cool

Nice pipe! the grain looks good, like Yak said where the stem and shank meet always sand and buff the two pieces together never take them apart and always sand them with a piece of sand paper wrapped around something flat so you don't accidentally round of your edges like on the saddle

Thanks BC, that's good advice. I sanded with them together but I jist used my finger and I guess that's how it got rounded. Again thanks fer the comments and advice.

Looks great, I understand long weeks and using wood working to relax. Been using it to get away from the in-laws this week! What a Face
