This is a pipe a member on another forum sent me. It is a Kaywoodie Handmade from the late 40's. I am finishing a bowl of Old Companion in it now, and it is a great smoker.

Late 40's you say Padre? By golly, my late Pap would probably have smoked one of those. Pap was a pipe guy as long as my memory of him and I remember him saying he had Kaywoodies.

I got into the pipe thing after he stopped smoking in his 80's. Sadly, his second wife threw his modest collection all out shortly after they were married. This was a few yrs after Mom passed.

He probably had about a dozen pipes, several of which I gave him over the years. Even made him a pipe rack when I was a young 'un in the mid 60's at the YMCA wood shop.

What I wouldn't give to have those pipes today! None were expensive or valuable. That wasn't his style. He just smoked a pipe, as did many of his peer group. It was just what you did.

Didn't mean to go off on a tangent like this Pardre. Guess I'm re-living some memories.

Wink

Cheers,

RR

I have often thought about my father's pipes. He would have 2 or 3, and smoked them whenever he was not asleep or eating. The concept of rotating them was an alien one to him, and the one he was smoking never really had much chance to cool even. He would have one that he smoked about 20 times a day. There would be another one in the fishing tackle box and maybe another one in the car or the office.

I think somewhere I have a bent billiard of his that he had scored the tenon on to raise it enough to stay tight. He had left it on the dash of the car, and the bend on the stem had "relaxed" a little. None of this seemed to make any difference to him. He had thrown the rest out when his doctor finally made him quit. I only remember his ever smoking one pipe with a screw tenon, and I am pretty sure it was a Kaywoodie 10. He always smoked bent billiards. All of them were cheap, reliable and well used - that was the way he rolled.

I have a picture of my grandfather with a pipe in his mouth, and it was your basic billiard. The resolution is not good enough to id it.

This gift pipe is a pipe that had a burn through and was fixed with epoxy from the outside and pipe mud on the inside. I suspect my father would approve. It is just his style (or lack of it maybe).

Great memories Padre. Thanks for sharing.

What I wouldn't give to share a bowl with my Pap today!

Here we are on a fishing trip. I am the youngster facing the camera. I can't tell if he had a pipe in his mouth due to the resolution and the shadows. My bet is yes.
