Dark Bird's Eye with Perique? Empty
PostSubject: Dark Bird's Eye with Perique?   Dark Bird's Eye with Perique? EmptyMon Mar 24, 2014 2:53 pm

I have one of those 1oz glass jars of Percy Martin Farm's perique. I've been trying to think of a good way to blend it to make best use of it for awhile. It popped in my head today that perhaps GH&Co.'s Dark Bird's Eye might make a good partner. Love me some Lakeland 'baccy and just thought this would be a good marriage. I'd probably just buy 4 ounces and then mix the two together. That would make a mixture that's one fifth fine perique. I'd jar it and let it marry and then probably smoke it in modest size pipes. Any thoughts on this? Any one have any experience with these one ounce jars of Percy Martin Farm's perique? Thanks.

Nope, I don't know that particular Perique, but that's a helluva good idea. The G&H with a dash of Perique sounds cheers  delicious.

I would use a lot less. You can always add more. But you will need to give it time to work it's magic.

Do you mean less perique? I've never blended perique but twenty percent seemed on the high side, though I love perique blends. If I use 6 oz of bird's eye that would be 1/7. About 14%. If I use a half pound it would be 1/9, so about 11%. I wish I knew the ratios of other perique blends.

There should be some discussions around here, but I think that 10% is on the high side from what I gathered over the years.

Which is curious given how straight perique smokes for me. A rather mild/medium smoke that is fairly uninteresting. The magic it can do to a Virginia blend is nothing short of amazing sometimes. Greg Pease has discussed blending, and always recommended working with very small amounts. Time for melding and magic is the difficulty.

I did a little BoB research and got some good insight. Especially here,
http://www.brothersofbriar.com/t15724p15-perique-percentages?highlight=perique
I'm going to go with the 1/7 ratio making it about 14%. I'll test that after some aging and if it's too much for me then I'll add more Dark Bird's Eye and re jar it. Again, I expect this to be a small bowl blend.

I mixed and jarred it. It was tragically difficult. The cut of the two tobaccos was dreadful for mixing. It was like trying to mix an actual birds nest and cotton candy. I could not just shake them together. I had to get my largest mixing bowl and pull the strands of both tobacco wads apart meticulously and mix it pinches at a time to try and get a good distribution. I remain hopeful this will be a fine mixture but definitely difficult to compose. Will try to update after melding it and smoking it.

Just make two tobacco pancakes, stack them, roll them up fairly tightly, then either cut or tear off pieces. Then fluff that all up. Voilá.  cat

What should we do with this leftover stuff from making beer? Feed it to the pigs?

No! That would be a terrible thing to do. Lets jar it up and sell it to people!

Marmite is an acquired taste, but one worth acquiring IMHO. Frankly I love it and always have a jar on hand.

It's not peanut butter, so don't put it on thick. The secret is to spread it thin on well toasted/well buttered bread. Rye doesn't work well, but a good whole grain wheat is the bomb!

This blend is nearing a year in the jar. I planned on smoking some then but was so heavily bombed recently I may let it sit longer since I have so many new things to try in baggies. I haven't forgotten.

Ps, I tried Marmite and thought it was good though I can't imagine any other application far from what brewdude recommended.

I mixed DBE and Perique (about 5:1) last year and really liked it. I can only imagine that a year of marrying would make it even better.

When I shred my 'perique', I try to keep it wide ribbons, then jar it up for later use. When I blend with it, it always tended to clump up. So, now, before I make a blend with it, I take it to a cutting board, and go at it with a nine inch French knife. A few chops one way, then another, not too much, and it becomes more manageable. Before I started doing that, it was a pain to get it to blend evenly with the other components, and when smoking, the experience of puffing away on a light tobacco and then falling into straight perique can be a shock, not to mention making my head swim...

It might not be too late to take a blade to what you have and give it the shake-n-bake action. Might smooth it out a bit....
