PostSubject: Two small pipes   Mon May 05, 2014 5:18 am

I would really rather like to take my pipe making in a whole new direction, it has been most enjoyable making the pipes I have made so far but they have all been rather large and not terribly interesting. I would very much like to get into making rather smaller pipes with a little more shape and interest to them, I made two recently which are rather small, they're nothing too special as they were both made from old blocks which were in the scrap pile so to speak and the stems are recovered from old broken pipes I had.

Any way, these are the two newer pipes I made, they'e not for sale as they're just experiments and they'll no doubt end up as gifts for a couple of folk in due course, haven't really thought about it too much in truth.

Yes Kirk! You're definately onto something here. I really like the refined, elegant look with the broad round shoulders on the bowls. They're just begging to be held. I'd say you've just discovered a whole new line for Briar Spirit Pipes!  cheers

Thank you Stick, these were just mucking around to be truthful, I didn't really put too much effort into them which is why they look a little off in places. They were never going to be serious pipes as they were made from scraps essentially, once I source more materials I am going to get into things very seriously, I really want to push myself in terms of shapes and styles. I should imagine I'll make as many as a dozen or so before I am happy with the new direction, those first pipes I expect will end up being gifts to folk then I expect to be getting into things on a whole new level.  sunny

Two gorgeous looking pipes. I think you are on to something here Kirk. They are quite attractive.

Nicely done my friend. The Acorn shape is well defined and although you say that you made them from scraps I'm sure they will be great smokes. There's a great advantage to smaller pipes, being that you can carry them easily and enjoy a short smoke. The old Savinelli "Bent Bobs" were made with that in mind. Keep up the good work, they look great.

All thanks to your guidance my friend, if you'd never suggested I try making smaller pipes I doubt I would have given it a second thought.  sunny

Very kind of you to say Doc, thank you Buddy, I originally wanted to get a strawberry shape in the 1st one but it went a bit wrong so changed it to the Acorn, the second one I didn't really try to hard as the block was so badly flawed, I just let the pipe 'be what it wanted to be', I guess the desire to make a Strawberry type shape was still lingering there, I should have tried harder I know but there it is.

Those look great. I love the grain on the bottom, reminds me of a cloud smoke swirling. What size did you use for drilling the bowl?

I tend to use an 18mm bit for the chambers as I usually make very deep bowls, those both have 18mm drilling but that's just because I only have an 18mm bit just now but I should have a 22mm bit arriving soon.
