Check it out: The (all-too-brief) return of Bill Watterson.

He really got what "comics" are supposed to be about namely, laughs. But his humor was refined, yet so human that anyone can relate to it.

Call it whatever you want, but I call it genius.

Not to worry, PeeBee. As he says, "Nah, the art form's dying" anyway.

Actually, it doesn't have to. Newspapers are dying, but there's no reason why the art form of comics can't remain as popular as ever...or even more popular.

Case in point: I take it that Pearls Before Swine is a newspaper comic. But I had never heard of it before this thing with Bill Watterson came up. Why? Because I don't read any newspapers. (Never mind why; that's another story.)

There was a time when newspapers were the main pipeline of information, but that was back in the days before radio, TV, and now the Intertubes. Many newspapers had morning and evening editions...and sometimes even special editions. But those days are long gone.

The point is that the only reason I even know about Stephan Pastis' comic is onna counta the Internet. So, the art form doesn't have to die. It just has to make the transition to a different medium.

I used to cut out each strip and collect them. Those are long gone now.

I love that Watterson challenged the practice where editors would cut the headers from Sunday comics. Once he had more space, he could do better. Papers that dropped him were lame.

I also appreciate that he protected his characters by nixing licensing.

That was awesome! Props to Watterson for being a good sport and making an artist's wildest imagination come true.
