PostSubject: Blackhorse - Nordic Ironwood Burl   Nordic - Blackhorse - Nordic Ironwood Burl EmptySat Jun 21, 2014 12:46 pm

Here's one I just finished.

Nordic blade by Lammi (Finland...hand forged in the 1930's) which is like a razor!

Handle is solid Stabilized Desert Ironwood Burl...and amazing piece.

Fittings are solid brass and black paper micarta. The butt plate is pinned with 3/16" brass pin stock.

The blade is 4"...the handle is 5 1/2".  The lines are very clean and I feel true to the spirit of a classic Pukko.  It feels very good in the hand.

Very nice work BH, nice to see a handle without the ergonomic shaping, I never find those handles comfy but this handle looks like it would afford a very strong grip and that blade is sahweeeeet, awesome work Buddy.  cheers cheers cheers

Yeah...I like ergonomic shaping and I like subtle contours and I like broomstick plain...each has a place. There is, BTW, a very subtle drop at the front of the handle...and the butt has an even more slight drop...gives it a nice visual.

I thought the old school blade deserved a kindred handle...one that would show off the Ironwood Burl grain.

Note: this is the first piece of Stabilized Ironwood Burl I've ever come across. That doesn't mean it's not out there, just that it isn't commonly done. It certainly is nice to work with, not so touchy. And it yields a spectacular result.

That is a really cool knife brother, has a classic and simplistic look to it. Looks like a real work horse, something that would definitely last through the years. Where do you get your brass stock at?

Wherever it's cheapest. Jantz...Texas Knife...sometimes even Amazon.

But...there's Brass, and then here's Brass. Red Brass, Yellow Brass, White Brass (Nickel Silver)...different formulas...hardnesses...I like it non-greasy (not too soft). But if it's from a knife place it's usually OK.

There can be a huge variation in prices for bar stock, sheet and rods. I usually put together an identical order at 3 - 4 outfits and go with the least expensive.

Now COPPER! That's the tricky stuff!

Try a quarter.Just make sure you sand it flat on both faces.

Try paper micarta...you'll love it!

Not quite yet.

Say...you should pose your materials questions in a thread dedicated to " questions about materials" or something. Start a new thing. Might be interesting.
