PostSubject: Jim's Belated Anniversary Announcement.   Thu Jun 26, 2014 12:49 am

I've been so busy with work lately that I forgot to post my admittedly self indulgent anniversary notices. June 20th was the 40th anniversary of my being a pipe smoker. The first pipe I smoked was my father's late 1950s smooth with etched grooves straight Willard long stem adjustomatic Billiard. On June 25, 1974, I bought and smoked my first pipe, which was a 1974 a smooth three quarter bend Dr. Grabow Omega. In both pipes, I smoked Borkum Riff Whiskey. They may not be world changing events, but for me, in many ways, there were life changing, and I wanted to share it with you folks.

Awesome memories.  cheers  It's been about twenty-one years for me, though I can't remember the specific date I smoked my first pipe.

OK guys, Jim started this so when did YOU start smoking?  Twisted Evil  For me it was in Dec. of 1969 when I got to 'Nam and was stationed at Tan Son Nhut airbase. My first pipe was a Kaywoodie I got at the PX and some of my CO's Granger as I recall. Pipe's gone and I don't smoke Granger anymore but I'm still burnin' the evil weed  Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

For me it started when my dad got me a Peterson for a b'day gift on June 25th 2010. Before that I smoked cigars only. Been smoking pipes mainly since, but am starting to get back into cigars also. Great story Jim and congrats. Love reading your reviews of tobacco.

Congrats Jim.

Me, I've been burning the pipe weed since around '96 or thereabouts. Got my first pipe at the Davidoff store in London (an inexpensive Chacom which I still have and smoke). I'd been into cigars for a few years and my Pap had been a pipe guy for as long as I can remember. So thought I'd take it up as well.

Cheers,

RR

I've been smoking since 1968 but, my first try at a pipe, if I remember correctly was in 1995?
Which only last about a month until 2009 I believe when I chanced to pick it up again.
I'm not good at dates.........ask my ex wife.

I've been smoking a pipe since age 16, which was in 1962. I used to "borrow" my grandfather's pipes, which were packed away in my father's dresser. He wasn't a smoker, and I don't think he ever caught on. My first purchase was a Medico apple, and the tobacco was Middleton Cherry, a blend I sometimes still partake of for nostalgia's sake, mostly, although actually it isn't that bad a burley concoction. I used to smoke that pipe on Explorer Scout outings with zero recriminations, and while doing a paper route I got sucked into. A 16-year-old smoking a pipe around town--it raised a few eyebrows, but no big deal. Have times changed, or what?

Has anyone noticed that Mr. JimInks is a cartoonist, and apparently a good one? That has to be one of the coolest professions imaginable.

I should have known he was more of an artist then with just a pen.
If he draws anything like he writes I'm sure it awes.

Sure would like to see some of his work! Hint Hint!  Wink

First smoke was in '61. Got a job at a pipe shop while in college. Bought a Comoy at the owners' suggestion. Still have it.

Well I Googled ya and ogled a while. Wow! Wonderful work sir to say the least.
Sorry to say I was always a Fantastic Four and Little Hot Stuff fan when I had my nose in the comics. But, I'm sure that was before your time as an artist among them anyway.
I had a bit of talent my teachers always said and always wanted to do the cartooning thing but, I never wanted to draw what someone else wanted me to and when. It was I had to be in the mood sorta thing.
Besides, I'm as color blind as the day is long so could never paint or even color properly.
Although they let paint Rickenbacker guitars for a few years.

I did get to do the Fantastic Four once, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man (even did the Sunday Spidey newspaper strip for a while), Star Wars, etc., but I never got to stay with the super-heroes.  I always loved the Hot Stuff character and would have loved to draw his stories. Working on characters that Jack Kirby created was always a blast. Jack was my first and always favorite comic book artist, and we were good friends for years.

Btw, I've written and/or co-written five books on comic book artists. I think they're all still for sale at Amazon.com.

Congrats Jim on the anniversary of pipe smoking and thanks for the information on your career as a cartoonist/artist.
I'll be tuning in on the radio show soon to hear the broadcast for sure.

As for pipe smoking I got into the art when I graduated high school in 1965 and working in a music store, continued to smoke the pipe into my Navy years. Could only get Sir Walter Raleigh in those days on base and after getting out of the military Borkum Riff and Amphora were the favored smokes for a long time. Been puffing on a pipe ever since and only until 1990 did I get seriously into collecting and going to pipe shows. Still at it and enjoying it more than ever with the fine acquaintances here on the forum.

Listening to the show right now. How did I not know about your work as an artist?! Your prolific pipe smoking certainly isn't news to me, but wow.... so good to hear your take on pipe tobacco. Incredibly proud to share the bonds of briar brotherhood with you, Jim. Congratulations on the anniversary.

Thank you, Trifecta, for the kind words. I never advertised who I was or what I did because I know it's a popular, though hardly lucrative career. I've found in the past that some people started treating me as if I was somebody of great importance when they learn I'm a professional writer and comic book artist, especially when it turns out they are fans of my work. I'd prefer to just be one of the guys, and some people think comic book artists are more than they really are. I felt I'd be bragging if I wrote about it on line, and I never really thought what I do had any more importance than anybody else's job. I call enough attention to myself as it is.

What I will brag about is that today is my 25th wedding anniversary. I married a great lady, and we are going to celebrate this evening with a very nice dinner.
