I have one. Great dog. Loving and loyal. However, he is very headstrong.

Family has had them and they don't deserve the reputation they deserve. Any large dog can be a problem if badly trained. I've encountered many more aggressive german shepards , most of the time the just do what they where raised to do. Met many more asshole people than I have asshole dogs. lol!

My sister has one. Named her Roxy... very affectionate dog, my only complaint was is that everytime she sees me, she gets so excited, she stands on her hind legs and punches me in the man parts, as I slowly kneel she'll climb in my lap to kiss me, whining the whole time cause she knows I'm in pain.

It's not the breed, it's the owner(s) that make for problematic pets.....

Take a look at family portaits from the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were the "nanny" dog and came by the name honestly. GREAT family dogs when raised by a normal person. In the hands of an assholed, however, they are extremely terrifying beasts. They are being bread to fight no adays and the agressive genes are being passed on. The gentle side of these dogs is being done away with by the ignorance of the people who breed them to be agressive.

"Met many more asshole people than I have asshole dogs."

That pretty much sums it up.

They are great dogs!  All dogs are wonderful, would rather have dogs than 10 "friends".

I had a Lab mix that had a lot of pit bull in him.  I've met few people more loving and trustworthy than old George, and I still tear up sometimes thinking about him even though its been 3 years.  The pit bulls I've encountered through friends and neighbors have all been sweet friendly animals.  Its a shame how a few can ruin the reputation of an entire breed.
Having said that, I think any dog worth his kibble would be mortaly embarrased by that first video  Laughing

OK I understand that there is the good the bad and the ugly.
While pit bulls can be warm and caring, there are these stories:

If I want to adopt a pit bull, what am I to think?

I mean this with all respect Bub, but in my opinion, if you don't know what to think, then you shouldn't be thinking about a pit bull.
I'm not a dog expert, but have raised and trained dogs my whole life.  I would never consider bringing a dog into my home if I had even the slightest fear or mistrust of the breed.  This is true no matter how ill founded that fear may be.
The man-dog relationship is one of hierarchy and place of dominance.  I know full well that my current dogs, coon hound golden retreiver mixes, could kill me.  I also know that they understand their place in the hierarchy and are happiest when I am in charge.  If I was afraid of them, they would be confused and uncomfortable with their uncertain place in the hierarchy.  This would make them unpredictable and potentially dangerous by no fault of their own.
Any breed of dog can be dangerous. An owner who is uncertain about the dog or outright afraid of the dog will more likely than not bring out the worst in that breed.
Mike.

Absolutely spot on!

You can love the dog, but you MUST adopt a superior position in the relationship.  You must lead the pack, so to speak.

I agree with MichaelM also.
We have a Golden who has been with us for most of his life.
He is the alpha dog and we are OK with that.
We have no problems with other dog, kids or neighbors.
I would feel very uncomfortable adopting an older pit bull whose behavior we didn't know.
