First pipe(s)........... Empty
PostSubject: First pipe(s)...........   First pipe(s)........... EmptyFri Sep 26, 2014 10:38 pm

My first pipe purchase was 2 weeks ago.  It was an estate Kaywoodie Magnum that I bought online.

Before it even came in, I found a deal on P&C .com I couldn't pass up.  The Missouri Meerschaum starter kit.

Both orders came in while I was on vacation and it was like Christmas when I got back this week.  I decided to make a trip over to my closest Pipe shop (over an hour away) to get some advise.  While there, George, the owner of the shop and one of the nicest men I've ever met, gave me a crash course on pipe smoking for beginners.  After a slight but well deserved scolding for buying my first pipe online, he showed me his personal technique for packing, lighting and smoking a pipe.  After picking out a mild aromatic and a couple of attempts at packing, I lit up and took a seat to enjoy my first smoke in the Kaywoodie.  Good smoke with the typical newbie 4-5 relights.  It did start to gurgle but not to bad.  I also learned the hard way about "dottle".  A couple of my relights were trying to light the dottle at the bottom.  After my smoke, I walked around the store and decided to buy a couple of different types of tobacco in 1 ounce bags.  I also decided to buy a Leonessa Aldo Apple Sitter.  Although I don't have any pictures, trust me she's purdy.  Then as I was looking at a different selection of pipes, I saw it.  In a wall case with a dozen or so "mini" pipes at the very bottom was this:

It may not be very logical for the normal pipe smoker, but it's....awesome.  I was thinking, this will be a great conversation starting pipe.  The bowl is a little small so I won't really have to invest a lot of time into smokes.  I pack the bowl of the truck with Boswell's Raspberry Creme for a the ride home and WOW!  Smokes cool and lasted about 30 minutes.  The walls of the bowl did get a little warm so I slowed down and gave in to the relights.  I'm pleased to admit, I'm officially addicted.....to pipe smoking.  Now I must go hand over my wallet to the wife, and enjoy more smokes.
Thanks to B.o.B. for giving me a place to share my experience as I go and continue to learn.

Mayo,
Sounds like you are getting off to a good start. Two things though, first, LOOSE THE IDEA about RELIGHTS !! They are a part of smoking and quite NORMAL !! Second, getting some gurggle will happen especially with fast smoking of Aro's.  Take your tme and enjoy what will become a lifetime pleasure !! BTW that's a neat little truck ya got there !! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Great job mayo and I'm so pleased you've taken to the briar. Monbla makes a good point about relights. Its a common misconception. Get yourself a nice lighter and relights suddenly become a pleasure. Have a pipe cleaner to hand too so the moment you get some gurgle you can run it through your pipe. Sit back, relax, enjoy and welcome to the fold.

Actually Ron, the truck was a new pipe.  It had quite a bit of dust on it so it had been sitting in that cabinet for a while.  The only marking on it is "Italy".  George even went ahead and rubbed a little honey on the bowl for me.  The stem is black with some milky brown coloring in it.  I've read about that somewhere on here but I'll have to do a search about it.

^^^This^^^ Laughing We actually had a thread one time of matches vs. lighters... seemed to be about evenly divided.

I like the truck pipe too. Never seen one like it.
