PostSubject: Went to a concert   Sat Oct 18, 2014 8:59 am

I'm not a fan of rock music. My comfort zone is classical through 40s swing/jazz.  But my wife has been a Fleetwood Mac fan since her school days. So when the original band got together for the first time in 17 years and their tour coincided with our anniversary I swallowed my aversion and bought a couple of 4th row tickets.  She had a very good time Very Happy
I found the experience odd.  I honestly thought that they played the same song 8 or 9 times, but my wife assures me they were different "hits."  The band members in their late 60s-early 70s acting like 20ish rockers, and the men in the audience in their 40s and 50s dancing around like teenage girls at a 1970 Dead concert just felt wrong.  The sound was loud and muddled (to my ears).  If I was alone, I would have left after the first song, but seeing how happy my wife was turned the "ordeal" into a fantastic evening.
And just to keep this a bit more forum appropriate, as we were leaving the venue I detected the unmistakable smell of Borkum Riff.  I told my wife someone was smoking a pipe and I got the "your crazy" look.  We exited, and there about 20 feet from the door was another exiting concert goer puffing on a billard!
Mike.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who despises most concerts. The symphony or opera? Anytime!

You did the right thing, though. It's all about keeping the missus happy.

OMG!  I thought I was the only one.  Never "got" rock, even as a teenager, and popular music in general and of any era seems boring and tailored for a common, but not necessarily inferior, mentality.  There are exceptions.  I love watching Blondie videos, for example, but that's for another reason, namely lust for Debbie Harry.  Nay, the great symphonies take me places that rock doesn't even know are there.  Strip it of its mind-numbing beat and you're left with what?

Mandatory disclaimer:  Just my opinion, YMMV, etc.

Well, I happen to really enjoy Fleetwood Mac. Loved their first 2 albums when they came out. Even though they might be considered "pop" by some, and despite being more into progressive R&R at the time, those classic tunes still have a place in my heart.

Saw them on some TV concert a few yrs ago, and even if they're "geezers" to some, it's heartwarming to see they still have it and can deliver after all these years. As well as putting aside all the petty personal issues that they might have about playing with one another.

Tell ya what, if they came to my area I'd be down in front!

Cheers,

RR

Rock music or having a door slammed on my head... both are painful to me. But like you, I would do anything for my lovely wife... even go to see Barry Manilow... oh, the horror. Laughing

Good job, Michael. Very Happy

Music is art.
Creativity is beauty.

I snore from a broken nose from a Rancid show. I bring cookies to work to celebrate Bach's birthday every year.

I visit the National Gallery when possible. I let my daughters color whenever they want (keep those white spongy things handy)

I enjoy the Second City's theatre scene, but I havent seen a movie in a theater in three years.

I read books... Real, Printed BOOKS. I read BOB too.

People are freakin' AMAZING.

I enjoy most music except rap & pop. I hate large concerts. Give me small clubs, especially piano bars and jazz clubs, and I feel the experience is much more ppersonal and enjoyable.

Oh and Barry Manalow is nothing compared to toddler music. My son was given a toy with some Wiggles songs (YouTube 'em) that makes me want to go on a rampage through the neighborhood!

I pretty much like or at least appreciate all music but rap, I get it but really don't want to. Wink

I really like the first few versions of FM especially and shied away from the most famous one with LB and SN. Still I did play many of their tunes, over and over, in cover bands over the years. Though I'm still out there playing thankfully I haven't had to cover a FM tune in awhile. Would love to play some stuff from the Bare Trees era if the opportunity arises though.

FM is a bit too pop for me. I have several of their albums. Tusk would be, for me, their best work. I have Tusk the album, and Tusk in Mono on a 45rpm.

We went to a Bob Dylan concert about a year ago.
The seats were expensive and he was about 2 inches tall.
The music was so amplified that we couldn't understand the words...maybe that is just Dylan.
I enjoyed the CD more.

Early Fleetwood Mac was some good stuff. "Fleetwood Mac" and "Rumours" were full of hits. I'm not necessarily a fan, but they would be fun to see in concert with so many hits. It sounds like they did play the hits (pay attention Mr. Neil Young...).
I'd rather take a beating than go to another symphony concert...

Am I the weird one?

I like all of those things...rock, classical, jazz, folk, even some pop, R&B, musicals, operas, rap, solo, ensemble, whatever.

Maybe that's because I'm a musician, I'm a classically-trained-in-jazz-punk-rocker that grew up on a small farm in the country taking lessons from my classically trained piano playing farmer dad who listened to Blue Oyster Cult and Jethro Tull and The Moody Blues everyday during breakfast and my learned-at-home-like-a-gypsy singer/songwriter guitarist and Serb/Cro folk playing mom.

That's what I'm talking about!

I went and saw Social Distortion a couple of weeks ago. Loud, rowdy, and lots of craziness going on, but talk about a fun show. I've always been a fan of concerts, whether it be the ballet, symphony, opera, or a metal band. It's all fun to me.

Provided, like PozzSka, I am a classically trained musician(received all of my scholarships in music) who grew up with Vivaldi, Pink Floyd, and Johnny Cash. I am a supporter, and fond of, all music, so long as it's put together well and has a good sense of musicality.

In my experiences with concerts, you don't go for the music, you go for the experience.

Aw, music appreciation is much like anything else that's subjective-

Food
Adult beverages
Art
Pipe weed
etc ad nauseum

Listen to what you like.

Yes, no arguments here. The folks that enjoyed themselves sure seemed to have a good time, and that's great. But I don't get the folks that say they can enjoy ANY music. I can listen, and I can appreciate, but that is still a long way from enjoying. But clearly what we enjoy is subjective.

It was meant as a joke. I think most of us here are comfortable with ourselves and each other... now there are other places on the internet where that poster would definitely be true... affraid

I always get bummed out when I go to concerts cuz I'm always ending up surrounded by people that feel like a show is free license to act like a jackass in some way. The last show I was at I got stuck next to 4 drunken morons that screamed a conversation in each others faces for two hours. I'm trying to watch and listen to a band and I'm not sure they even noticed there was a band. Why would all 4 of you come here with zero interest in actually seeing and hearing the band? Oh, because it gives you the opportunity to scream drunken nonsense in my ear for two hours about your classes and some local restaurants. Thank you very much.

Now we're talking Music! cheers

MichaelM - My wife felt the same way at a Blue Oyster Cult concert years ago. When they did their spectacular solo work in 'Last Days of May' she changed here tune and was more than impressed - couldn't believe what they were capable of - but only for that song.

She's a life-long Country Music fan so that concert was painful for here also...

I try to catch at least a dozen concerts a year, but my children are making that difficult for me. That said I have been hitting the late Warren Hellman's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco each year. Quota filled in a weekend. Very Happy

Had to laugh at that one. I'm missing a tooth from a Dropkick Murphys show in Detroit, and have tinitus from my "involvement" with a number of ska core bands in the early nineties. I've also got a genuine piece of Beale Street pavement imbeded in my left knee. Can't remember who was playing that night, or much of Memphis at all from July 4th, 2004. We should get together and compare "music" scars like that scene in Jaws. (or Chasing Amy)
