Yeah, Stormfront is an exceptional blend. I'm not sure it's the best but it seems to be in my pipe a lot.

It is good. I always think it tastes like Carter Hall on steroids. Not a go to for me, but I like it now and then.

According to TobaccoReviews, there are four "Burley based" blends that score higher.

So at least 37 people disagree ... P )

Stormfront and Dark Horse are two of my favourite JLP blends for sure.

<Little known fact, but Dark Horse is a concoction that our own esteemed BH suggested to JLP who made up a custom blend for him based on BH's recommendation. And it subsequently made it's way into regular production. Hence the name "Dark Horse"!>

Cool

Cheers,

I like Storm Front, and for the most part, I do not get along with Burley.

My favorite burley blend is Solani ABF. As far as burley goes, IMHO there's nothing I have smoked that's finer, even Steven Books's Grandpa's Own which is damn good as well. I actually think I still have a couple ounces of it. Very Happy

My spin on using the review site...one of my favorite haunts:

OK - if you use the search engine over there you get 17 blends that score higher, but very few of them have more than one or a couple of reviews. I toss those out right off. Uhle's 00 is really the only one that has enough reviews for me to consider it. And Uhle's 00 is a very good blend...it has a strong following...has been around long enough to be known...if regularly available from a solid vendor...very high quality...broad appeal...etc. It's a player.

Patton's blends are available on one website (just like Uhle's) but even though John has been blending (or used to be) for a good while...he's not out there any more. So it's a word of mouth thing. In my book, if you put the two side by side you would come away liking Storm Front far more.

Add that to the fact that if you go through, say, all the reviews on a blend that you like and know really well...there will be some that you agree with but lots that you totally disagree with. Sometimes you might wonder if the guy is on the same planet. So what does that suggest?

The thing you have to ask yourself is whether or not the fact that one or three or sixteen or whatever number of guys went to a website and rated it highly makes it a better blend...for you. Given that everyone's tastes are very different you really have to sit down and try 'em for yourself, in a couple of different pipes and decide for yourself.

So reviews are nice, and fun and often instructive...but just one guy's opinion. What I've done with good success is to go through a blend, again, that I think I know...and find maybe five guys that you totally agree with. Write 'em down. Look up other blends that you know and see what they say. Eventually develop a list of guys that really seem to be on your wavelength...and when you want to know what to think of a potential blend...check what they say. It's more of a known commodity that way and not so random.

That's what I think about the review site. I love it and consider it recreational reading. But it's not gospel.

According to PD, Uhle's 00 is P. Stokkebye Pressed Burley 702.

I find that interesting, especially considering the TR.com ratings of those two blends.

Uhle's claims that Jack Uhle blends '00'. Does P Daddy know different?

I would assume so. PD has mentioned this before here.

When I was running recon on a Santa target I asked him about this, and he said "Yes, Blend 00 is PS 702."

I have purchased Uhle's 00 directly from Uhle's multiple times. I have purchased Stokkebye ps702 Pressed Burley from multiple sources. I cannot tell the difference. That's all I have to go by. Well, that and the same opinion held by a couple others who have tried both (credit goes to Ol Dawg who made me aware of this. Have not seen him around here in quite some time).

Of course, the phrase "for me" should always be added.  Since it's a totally subjective thing.

And...I still have a half pound of Exhausted Rooster sealed and sitting. Likely going on 10 plus years now. It should be just about ready.

That's spot on with how I regard the site as well.     What a Face

I've actually never tried Storm Front and in general I'm not a big fan of high % Burley blends.    I will have a bowl of PA on occasion though.

You know what the review site brought me back to, that I never ever gave a fair shake? Aros. I found three reviewers that made many positive comments similar to each other re crossover or semi-aro blends, many of which I liked quite a lot. So I extended that into their reviews of aromatics. Now, since Esoterica has a number of blends that are labeled as aros (in the British style as opposed to the American style) I had avoided them...but on reading those other reviews I gave a couple of them a shot...ultimately finding one of my top five favorite blends...Ramsgate. So yeah, thoughtful and even systematic use of the TR site can and does yield significantly positive results.

Stormfront is the best burley blend if you believe it. And it's not if you don't. Remember taste is subjective. What's the point in knowing definitively what the best blend is if you happen not to like it. I tried the Stormfront and thought it was really great stuff but I preferred the Darkhorse. So if all of you come to terms and decide stormfront is the best I frankly won't care. Now if you're asking if people should try stormfront then without hesitation I'd say yes, they might find that it is the single best burley blend available!

Well, I was talking Burley Blends, so...Darkhorse (being my personal design and adjustment to an existing Patton blend and thereafter named in my honor) is a horse of a different color.

But be that as it may, I was just trolling for comments, etc.

Maybe we should write up a BoB Blend Comment Disclaimer for guys to post following their typical diatribes of blend boosting. Something like:

"The above comments reflect my own personal opinions only. It is understood that others may not share in these opinions, and that's fine. I know that we each embrace different blends as being the best. I support that and pledge to uphold the right and privilege of each member to proclaim their opinions without backlash or derision...just as I expect that same degree of respect to be afforded me."

As a matter of fact, I think I'll add it to my signature line!

Well, then with all disclaimers applied, I just haven't smoked enough of it to put it ahead of the burleys I'm more familiar with. Many of the burley forward blends I've had are flakes. In the way of mixtures that are burley forward I can't say I've had better. In that vein, OJK is what I smoke the most of but that's more about it being a consistent standard with strength than the pinnacle of flavor.

Peretti's 333 Blend is good...a nice dark Burley, but smooth.

The last time I was at their Park Square store in Boston I got a big tin. Don't think about going down there right now though. The weather is, um, disagreeable. Poor saps.

Well, whatever. Flakes? Of the Wessex and Solani flakes I like the Solani, but find both very good. Exhausted Rooster is so Perque forward it's kind of on it's own as a unique item. Peretti has a Burley Flake as well, called Somerset...again quite a fine rendition. And I'm sure there are others. I'm just glad that I have some small ability to focus on the blend I have in my bowl instead f always looking to something new, something different, etc. That'll drive ya nuts for sure.

The Patton blend, no. I don't do Latakia.

The classic Bermuda drink, yes. Black Seal Rum and Ginger Beer are totally excellent in a Collins glass on the rocks.
