PostSubject: First ever snuff order. (edited)   Wed Feb 25, 2015 2:16 pm

OK - just did my first round ever (this list may look familiar):

Bernard Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert 10g
Poschl Gawith Apricot 10g
Samuel Gawith Black Coffee 10g
Wilsons Ice Licorice 10g
Wilsons Rose of Sharrow 10g

Seems like a broad,  reasonable way to dip my toe in the water.

Edit: Added the following:

Fribourg & Treyer Macouba 25 g
Wilson's Jasmine 10 g
Toque Apricot 25 g

There! That should do me for a while.

Interesting additions. Haven't had the F&T Macouba. So far the F&T's that ring my bell are French Carotte and High Dry Toast. Shane Ireland turned me on to French Carotte. I practically blame him for rekindling my love of snuff. That wicked, wicked boy!

Oh boy.. Shawn, there's TAD and there's PAD. We've all had it. But very few go the extra mile and experience SAD. I will say this, snuff is something that has to be experienced to be understood. Most folks simply pass it by because it seems like a rather crude expression of the art of enjoying tobacco. But experiencing a fine snuff, is on par with sticking your nose in a Glencairn glass and sniffing your favorite peeted malt, the boquet of sturdy Cabernet even. Are you an olfactory hound? I know you are. Do you like a little nictotine, a subtle feeling of elation? If so, you too may want to get SAD. It might very well be the deepest rabbit hole in the entire world of tobacco products.

End of snuff public service announcement. Razz

Would Toque Natural Toast and Original be good examples of the toast and Spanish types?

I have recently gotten back into snuffing, and scored a lot of great snuff from Kapnismologist at a great price. I enjoy it a lot, and actually use it at work. Nice addition to the work day! I have found some new favorites Smile

Yes. I would say that Toque Natural is a great toast. Right up there with High Dry Toast, perhaps a little sweeter. Toque Original would definietly fall into the SP category. Depending on who you talk to, the term SP has a few different meanings. Some believe it stood for "Sheffield Pride," others simply "Spanish," while others think it stands for "Superior Product" even. No one knows for sure, but typically an SP is a medium grind, medium strength snuff that was lightly flavored with citrus or bergamot. The scent typically has little staying power, but is quite envigorating, as the scent dies down the snuff finishes with a pure toast like tobacco scent. Couple other examples of SP's are Wilson's Tom Buck and Best SP (Both are nice) and they are classic examples of the style. Toque's Original is more modern, as Toque is a young brand. Still very good though. Plus Toques tins are the best for long term keeping. WOS tins are a bit janky.

Another thing to add, I have tried bullets, and they are not my thing. I prefer a small "spoon" for snuffing. I also found some really cool little wooden twist lid boxes at a local Indian (Eastern, not American) store, for placing small amounts for usage. YMMV

OK, good. I picked up those two in Tins and matching little bullet thingies directly from Toque. That makes a total of ten different brands and styles. If what I've got doesn't rock me then it wasn't meant to me.

So now it's:

Bernard Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert 10g
Poschl Gawith Apricot 10g
Samuel Gawith Black Coffee 10g
Wilsons Ice Licorice 10g
Wilsons Rose of Sharrow 10g
Fribourg & Treyer Macouba 25 g
Wilson's Jasmine 10 g
Toque Apricot 25 g
Toque Natural Toast
Toque Original

And FM,

I've got what I think is the perfect spoon, long handled, stainless steel, marked as a "smidgeon".

I think what are described as the 'auto injector' things might be a little too sci fi for me. Anyway, I'd be afraid a big ol' needle would come jabbing out at me...so I'll stick with the 60's style. I should be good to go.

I use a Brigham pipe nail, has a nice little spoon-ish end.

I would avoid the auto injector with the Toasts. I am sure they work nicely with moister snuffs but toasts require some finesse. There's a good method for toasts that involves pinching a little between your thumb and pointer finger and holding it for a good 30-45 seconds. This does a couple things, it moisturizes the snuff a little and it warms it up which helps to open the boquet up a bit. Toast is fine and dry, shoot it freestyle or in a bullet and you'll either sneeze to death or find yourself doing backflips up and down your driveway.

I'm thinking I might be up for ordering a bit of heavy gauge sterling rod stock. I feel a mini spoon forging project coming on!

Fun first choices.

As far as use, you may try the pinch and roll, the pinch and stuff, the boxcar, the ASB (anatomical snuff box), back of the hand, or spoon.

Part of the fun is figuring out what works for you. I prefer using the ASB or the back of my hand.

If you continue down this road hankerchiefs and Kleenex will be companions.

OooKaayyyy.

I can visualize most of these, but boxcar and ABS are just a tad foggy.

OK then.

The last damn thing I need is another X-AD of any kind.

People on a pipe site are rolling their eyes at my tobacco order posts. I'd have to go in hiding.

Connoisseurs of having their faces slapped upon rising might like Poschl's Red Bull. It's what I use for that purpose. Better than coffee. I can appreciate others, like F & T's High Dry Toast, but I apparently need the menthol blast. Not a steady user, other than the aforementioned. No danger of SAD, but an occasional order makes its way to me from across the pond. Good luck. The stuff is quite tasty, if that's the right word.

Warning, I might add: Red Bull is strong.

Nothing wrong with a good Menthol Blast. Razz

I thought the Red Bull was really strong until someone sent me a small sample of Dholakia White. Powdered Evil! Now that's where I draw the line.. Ha, ha

Face slap lovers...nice. So it's the kind of thing Sam Spade would get Joel Cairo for Christmas. Ouch.

ASB: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatomical_snuffbox
Boxcar: created by taking your pointer finger and wrapping it around your thumb - creating a box. This is a very popular method.

Msg. sent to Fatman earlier today...

Check these out. I get 5 ink samples a month for $10 from the Goulet Pen Company. Good people. They send the ink in these little waterproof, airtight vials. They might be a perfect size  (7ml) to store snuff, I think. And you can also get a rack they will fit into. And they're cheap.

On the way to the airport (wife and hubby annual trip to Carmel Valley) we stopped in to 82nd St. Tobacco's B & M. Why yes, they did carry snuff. So there this little case containing maybe two dozen different items...F&T, Gawith, etc. I am a certified research hungry freak, and having spent the past week reading reviews, making Ross Perot style graphs and charts, etc. I knew enough to bypass the Gawith straight tobacco item, reputed to be a head banger. Instead I got a Gawaith SP and a F&T Seville, another SP style blend I guess.

I'll try 'em out tomorrow. Should be interesting, to say the least.
