Help me pick my next 'baccy! Empty
PostSubject: Help me pick my next 'baccy!   Help me pick my next 'baccy! EmptyMon May 18, 2015 5:22 pm

So I recently branched out from the OTCs and Aros and tried some Dunhill 965. It's a nice, full flavored, smoke, but I'm starting to think Latakia just isn't my thing. Now, don't get me wrong, it grew on me after a bowl or so, but I just don't think it's for me.

I've got some MM Great Dane and Missouri Pride (the tobaccos, not the pipes) coming in the mail soon, and they sound pretty good. Can't wait to try 'em!

For my next order, I'm conflicted. I know I don't want any more Aro's (seeing as I can usually get them locally), and probably won't try any new English blends for a while. Maybe I should try Virginas or Periques?

I don't know. What do y'all say?

Try a couple ounces each of Luxury Bullseye flake, and Luxury Navy Flake.

Cheap in bulk, and easy to handle.

After checking out TobaccoReviews, that Bullseye Flake sounds like something I'd definitely enjoy. and I've not smoked any flakes yet, so that'll be fun!

Is it true that a dedicated pipe for Virginas is necessary to really enjoy them? I might have to buy a new piece . . . Laughing

Kid, as far as picking the next 'baccy goes, this thread might be very useful-

http://www.brothersofbriar.com/t19560-suggested-blends-etc-for-newer-pipe-smokers

And further to your question about dedicated pipes, that's up to you. You'll get a great many responses here, all pretty different I'm sure. The only certainty I can really offer is that any Lakeland will ghost a pipe in a heatbeat, so those are best off with a dedicated pipe. Also beware of deer tongue as that will certainly ghost a pipe. Perhaps not as badly as Lakelands but it will take a while to get rid of the taint (I know this through experience).

A good few of us here have dedicated pipes for various styles and indeed specific blends. But that's our personal preference and should not be indicative of any hard and fast rules.

In fact bro Monbla smokes straight 'ginnys and Lat blends in the same pipes and reports no issues with flavor carry-over. And he will also be forthcoming in stating (as he has many times) that after 40+ yrs smoking his palate may not be as sensitive as it once was.

I believe his view is that if one doesn't smoke too many bowls of one style before switching to another then the cake will not take up so much character from whatever one is burning. Or at least that's what I've gathered from his posts (and please chime in here Michael if I've mis-quoted you).

So I've rambled enough. Hope some of this helps, and remember there are few fast and solid rules in pipe smoking/enjoyment. It's pretty much down to what you like, your experience, your technique, your enjoyment.

Cheers,

RR

Other than saying, "Yah, what Brewdude said", I would ask if you have smoked for very long, and if you like aromatics, there are a few that you could enjoy, but,(always a but) aromatics will make their presence known in a few bowls on the next stuff you put in the pipes. (Ghosting).

I personally started pipe smoking from cigarettes and dove right into aromatics. They are sweet, flavorful and way different than the Marbs I was used to.... Wrecked a lot of pipes smoking them 15-20 times a day, regardless of what I put in them. I will say aromatics tend to run wetter than most others....

We all tend to like sweets, so it is no wonder we all don't let our sweet tooth guide our journey through pipe tobacco. Some are a high and light sweet, some are like dark chocolate cheesecake. Various shades of gray....(more than fifty)

So I would suggest reading descriptions of blends while shopping, read reviews, and take chances often but in small increments. When you run across something you don't like, don't throw it out for a while. Revisit it later.. Tastes change, and we humans are easily bored..............

PM me if you would like a sampler, I tend to dabble and drift.......

When I was at your stage of pipesmokerly development I discovered MacBaren tobaccos. This preceded any liking for latakia blends, straight Virginias, VaPers, etc., and followed my waning aromatic stage. Seemed like a natural transition then, and it still does now. Many of their blends are kind of sweet, but in a non-cloying way. Scottish Mixture is a good one. Just sayin' what worked for me. Your tastes may differ, and they probably do--in which case you are on your own, as was I fifty+ years ago.

What Dude has said especially the link for new smokers as it contains a lot of good suggestions from some well smoked palates ! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil  And a far as my reasons for "no ghosting", most English/Balkan blends/mixtures are Virginia BASED and most traditionally DON'T contain TOPPINGS or extra FLAVORING agents in them . ALL blends/mixtures are CASED which is different than TOPPED as this is part of the processing ALL raw tobacco goes through to give it the ability to be smoked. As has been pointed out, my preferences are for mostly straight Va blends/mixtures with those that are mostly Red Va's.
The one thing I would say is DON'T PING-PONG from blend to blend, pick two or three, a full tins or 2 ozs worth that taste good from your sampling. and smoke these ONLY till they are consumed in as wide a variety of pipes and conditions as you can and THEN move on to some more. in the same manner! A few bowls of this then that will NOT tell you what a blend/mixtures like. AT your age, you've got a LOOOONG way to go with this form of oral enjoyment so take your time !!  .
