PostSubject: My new handle should be "Batman"! (long)   Tue Jun 16, 2015 8:11 pm

Had the third bat in my house since I've lived here. Was rudely awakened around 3AM by some fluttering just above my bed. Turned on the bedside lamp and sure enough, a rather largish bat was circling around the bedroom just a few feet above my head!

Ya, I'm no stranger to this. As I said it's the third time and for some reason they seem to like to fly up to my second story and get trapped in my bedroom. So I did what I have done in the past - got a broom from downstairs and went back up to perform some "batting" practice!

The thing was just doing laps around the room, and after a few swings I had it stunned on the floor. In the past I've used the broom to crush it first. This time however I wanted to see if I could get it outside, in the event it was still alive. They do eat bugs after all.

Got the bedroom wastebasket and put it over the bat (large sucker too - probably a 9" wingspan). Tried to pick it up with the broom over the top but it came back to life and started to fly laps around the bedroom again.

By now, my heart was pounding and the BP up several orders of magnitude, so I just retreated to a corner and took another couple swings at it. Felled it on the 3rd or 4th swing.

This time got it in the wastebasket with the broom on top and conveyed it downstairs and out the door where I dumped it on my driveway. I figured if it was alive at all it could fend for itself. If not, I'd dispose of it later.

By now it was clearly at least an hour earlier than I normally rise, but there was no way I could go back to sleep. So had my coffee and then into work. Still too dark to see if it was still where I dumped it. But didn't look to hard either!

Came back home in the light to find no trace of it. Hopefully it recovered from the bashing and flew off to do whatever bats do when they're outside.

The thing I'm always minded of is that they can carry rabies, so no way am I going to handle them. If they're in my house they are vermin, just the same as I'd regard a mouse or rat.

Now the question remains how they are getting in. 3 intrusions in like 17 years. So that's not what you might regard as high, but significant enough. For me at least.

After the first two incidents, I performed a thorough search of all corners of the house. Bedrooms, closets, bathrooms. Looked at every single stretch of space where there might be a crack in the area where the walls meet the ceiling and so forth. Nothing. Still nothing this time.

The only place left must surely be the gap in my fireplace insert flue pipe and the chase to the roof vent. Never really considered this until just today, but came home and got out a flashlight and discovered that there was a good 2" or so gap there.

Hard to believe that bats are making a colony in my chimney flue, but there again I only use the woodstove during power outtages in the winter months, and even then it may be years between using it.

So with this resolve, I got a roll of fiberglass insulation and proceeded to cut strips off it and stuff it into the gaps around the chase and the flue pipeing. I looked into expanding foam insulation at the hardware stores, but none of these were recommended for a temp beyond 450F. In fact most of them were far below that. Don't know what temps the flue temps get up to with a hot fire in the box, but better not to risk it.

Also got a fisherman's net. 2' handle and big net. So if there is a further intrusion I figure I can use this to catch the flyers and they'll get entangled in the net. I can then take them outside and release them without too much trauma.

"Catch and release" - now ain't I the grand PC one!!!

Just call me "Batman" from here............

Wink

RR

Rande, at least you will be able to tell your GP you have been getting your heart rate up for extended periods of time!

Hopefully you won't have a PETA member read this post and have you locked down.

Chris, there should've been someone there with a camera-

There I was, standing my skivvies in the bedroom with a broom like a baseball bat screaming "OK you sonnavabitch, bring it" and swatting at mostly air like a little league rookie!

Must have looked like a comic sight!

We had a bat in our bedroom and this is what I have learned. If you find a bat in your bedroom you should capture it and call the Health Department, or what ever is the appropriate agency, so that they can determine if it has rabies. Bats have very sharp teeth and they can bite you and you will not know it. This is a serious problem if you find a bat in a child's or elderly persons room. When we discovered the bat we escorted it out the window and discovered the next morning, after calling the health department, that we should have captured it and called them. Perhaps you think that this is an over reaction, but this is what they recommend. By the way I did get rabies shots...while they are expensive they do not hurt. Hopefully you have health insurance. By the way my wife's doctor did not recommend the shots...but he later regretted it. As an aside, neither of us got rabies.

Rande,

I was playing a gig about 8 years ago out in Madison CA. Kind of a rowdy dinner party for the Yolo Land and Cattle Co, who were celebrating their recently signed land trust. The gig was insanely fun and was capped off by a strange slightly warm thin fleshly thing smacking me in the face during one of our more uptempo tunes. Trying my best to keep good rhythm, I shook it off, still wondering what the hell hit me when right under my nose I notice the sudden violent thrashing of a bat's wings. Our lead guitar player turned around looked at me and yelled "BAT!" The damn thing was hooked on my shirt collar, probably completely disoriented by the music we were still managing to make. Still playing, our guitar player then took the end of his telecaster and managed to flick it off my shirt with the headstock. Amazingly we finished the song with out a hitch! Although, I almost had a freaking heart attack. I definitely had a few more beers that usual that night to compenstate for my frayed nerves. Those suckers are far from cuddly.

Wow, seems to be a lot of run ins with bats. We have a couple of bat boxes out back in the field. I see one now and again. Never had one in the house though. Could be a little freaky. affraid

...err, Rande with the recent passing of Sir Christopher Lee this is bothering me somewhat old chap. The two events are clearly linked. Never mind fibre glass padding and a net, what you need is garlic and rather large wooden stake... Suspect

My father-in-law had a few mice in his attic a few years ago.

Exterminator came out, went up to the attic, and told him that he could take care of the mice, but someone else needs to address the bat problem first, as he's not licensed (or trained, or something like that) to handle the bats.

So the bat guy comes out. Heads up to the attic and tells him he can handle the bats, (plus the previously unknown birds) he found with no problem. But he really can't do anything about that until someone else comes out and takes care of the raccoon that's made a home up there.

Raccoon guy comes out, takes care of raccoon and the bats and the birds. Tries to eliminate the mice but "wasn't sure he was successful." He also recommended a siding guy to come out and take care of the siding that was pulled away from the house, which was what the let the zoo into the house to begin with.

First mouse guy comes out, discovers that bat/bird/mouse guy in fact did NOT eliminate the mice, so he does his thing. Siding guy comes out, can't do his thing yet because there's a wasps nest the size of Portland between the loose flap and the house.

Wasp guy comes out, does his thing. Siding guy comes out, does his thing. FINALLY the problem's solved.

Until the next day when he hears something in his attic. He goes up, pokes around, and THE BATS were back. The Bat guy assures him they were handled and must have come back sometime between when he took care of them and when the siding was finally addressed. Bat guy comes back out, and does his thing...again.

We kept waiting for someone to come out and let him know that they can't take care of the wasps, siding, racoons, bats, birds or mice until someone gets up there and removes the bengal tiger, but it didn't get quite that far.

Sounds like good advice Stick! lol!

I had a pet bat when I was a kid for a short time until I was found out. I took him to school and one of the kids ratted me out to the Nun. I made a pet out of anything that moved when I was a boy.

Somehow I knew this would bring out bat stories and experiences. This one is pretty interesting Ian!

Looks like he should've gotten in the Turtle Man!

Quite an experience Rande!  You might want to rethink the net idea.  It seems like it would be easier, but bats are not great at untangeling themselves. Hopefully sealing the holes will make you nocturnal visitors scarce Shocked

Ya, I get it. I would try to untangle the net outside so as to make their escape as easy as possible.

Without actually handling them, mind!

I hate Rats, Mice, and Cats, specially inside my home but, somehow I like bats but, to have one flying around in my house............no sir. Would I get the gun out, naw but, I would probably do exactly what you did BD and then hope I didn't hurt it. I ran over a snake a few days ago with the tractor and felt so bad. He crawled away into a hole but, after that I still worried I had hurt him and didn't want him to die.
Strange, if I had done it to any of the before mentioned animals I wouldn't have given them a second thought and would have probably been glad I ran over'em............ probably would have turn around for a second try too. Wink
