PostSubject: Grandfather & Pipe (1927)   Sun Sep 27, 2015 9:55 am

My father was born in 1919. His father immigrated from Wales and came thru Ellis Island in 1898. My grandfather was a coal miner near Wilkes-Barre PA and died in 1943. My father always told me that he smoked a pipe. Unfortunately, he had no pictures of his father as my dad was in the Army when he died and his belongings discarded before he returned home. Well, in my moving my parents (Dad is now 96) last week, I found several old photos in their picture albums. This shows my Grandfather with a pipe in his hand and my father in overalls. The picture wasn't dated, with only names on the back. My father looks to be around 8 years old, so the photo was taken in approximately 1927.

Cool. Wish I had some pics of my pipe-smoking antecedents, also Pennsylvanians.

Long gone I'm sure. We're tickled to find this picture - for decades my father has said none existed.

Great pic!! I had a similar experience when my Dad passed in '99. His then wife handed me a photo album stock full of family pics I never knew about, much less ever seen. I'll never know why he never showed them to anyone!

One of my most treasured possessions is my great-grand father's handmade cherry wood pipe with a slightly curved sweet gum (I think) stem. Still smokes dang good Smile cheers FTRPLT

Here are a couple of pictures of mine. The first is my grandfather in a picture dated 1920. He is the one with the pipe sitting on the ground on the left. My grandmother is behind him over his left shoulder. It is not the best quality photo of a photo.

here is a picture of my father that I like. He was fishing here with his mother about 55 years after the first picture was taken (same grandmother).

Really nice photos Al and our good Padre. I wish I had some of my father with one of his pipes but unfortunately I do not.

Those are great Tom! To this point, we thought none existed of my grandparents, which is sad.

I've got to have some pics of my late Pap with his pipe in hand. I do remember at least one, so will have to dig deep in the old family snapshots. Maybe one of my work mates can scan them and I can figure out how to post them.

Wishful thinking....

Cheers,

I had to look it up. Model T's were made from 1902 to 1927 and Model A production started in 1927. Up until the depression, Pap Jones was doing OK but I don't think well enough as a coal miner to buy a new Model A in '27 when I believe this photo was taken. I spoke to my dad tonight, he thinks it was a Model T but he can't remember when his father died or even how old he was. I think I remember him telling us it was in the late 40's. It's a bit sad all that remains of our family history is an old worn photo.

Al, at least your family could afford some nice clothing and a decent haircut. Some of my family photo's from the 1920's, the females were wearing dresses fashioned from what looks to be bedsheets, and had haircuts that could be best described as "inspired by Bozo the Clown." Laughing

I was surprised at how well off they appear to be in this photo.

Great pics chaps. My father was never a pipe smoker but I do remember him with the occasional cigar, usually around Christmas. 'Pa', my grandfather on my mum's side was an avid piper but as a family we have few pictures of him with a briar. Shame really, he was one of the reasons I took it up.
