PostSubject: BLOATED POP TOP TINS   Fri Oct 09, 2015 2:16 pm

I got a couple of circa 2011 very bloated pop top tins of baccy and wondered if the contents are any good to smoke or not. I have no idea how they were stored previously but, it look's like it must have been hot.
I know when can goods (food stuff) get bloated it's time to get rid of them but, tobacco can age and be fine but, fermentation is a different story I think. Anyone know, please no educated guesses or Kentucky Windage here, need factual knowledge. Thanks guys Wink

Virginia heavy blends will do this due to fermentation. I opened a tin of Union Square a year back or so that was like a weeble-wobble. Tobacco was perfectly fine.

Completely normal. Every Pease tin I've ever seen over 5 years was bloated a bit. Just pop it and enjoy.

Ron,
About 5 years ago a friend sent me 5 100g tins of Virginia Woods that he was not going to smoke any more and 4 of them had raised/bubbled up lids , no seal was broken they wre just "popped " up as you say. He lived in Houston and had stored these in a box in his garage for a few years and well, you know Houstons weather, Hot and Humid which is probably why these did what they did. Anyway, I opened one up and it REALLY popped when I did but all I smelled and saw was some VERY WELL AGED Va 'baccy! They had white sugar crystals all over and this was the case with all 5 I had NO problem with mold or such and the 'baccy was some of the BEST Va I had ever smoked !! I would open them one at a time and smoke from that tin thn go to the next etc, etc. This is the only experience I've had so you can decide for yourself . Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Firstly! Thank you all for the knowledgeable replies. I didn't know they would do that but, now considering your responses and the type of tin I can see why. 99% of all my tins are screw on lids and they have never done it but, they are much thicker and of different design. I will surely enjoy all of these, thanks again kind sirs. Wink

I've got a large number of Mason type jars stored in cabinets in my bedroom. I love it when there's a temperature or barometric pressure shift. I lay there and listen to the lids popping. Sounds like one of those little frog popper things...like they gave to the GI's before D Day. Boink! Boink!

Even those tough glass jar lids are pushed in or out by internal fermentation and other pressures.

And I should have added that I've smoked those same tins' tobacco too. Aged swollen Triple Play, I recommend it. geek

I've heard someone say that before but, I've yet to here mine do anything and I have about 20 or more in a bottom drawer but, the temps are always kept no higher the mid 70's in the house so this may or may not have anything to do with it. Or it could be I just don't hear'em. Wink

And John, they just happen to be Triple Play but, I will try to restrain myself from smoking any right now.............maybe in a week or two or day.

I had the same problem just over a year ago and, after taking advice on here (http://www.brothersofbriar.com/t27941-have-i-got-a-tobacco-ied), I popped the tin (good woosh but that's all) and jarred it.

The tobacco concerned - Triple Play affraid

Nothing wrong with it. Just the nature of the beast.

There have been a number of bad batches of Pease product and other C/D related blends, as mentioned in the above links.

When you open the tins, inspect for mold. A little pressure is pretty normal, but a real bulge on the tin could be indicating a problem. Given the track record with the tobacco, I think you should be... informed, if not concerned.

Hmm,maybe I should open one up but, then again I'm colorblind so green spots I won't see, white and fuzzy yes. And if I ask the old woman here she'll probably lie and say it's green just so I'd get rid of it.

Ya know life's a bitch and then you have to spend eternity with your EX!

I agree. Open 'em ALL up and jar 'em. Be done with it. Breathe easy and sleep better.

I opened one up and it didn't abruptly pop just a light pop and no over whelming aroma.
Didn't see any green but, of course I'm color blind but, I didn't see any white fluffy stuff nor sugar crystalline as I would have expected from a 4 year old tin. It was damp but, not wet so I loaded a bowl up and from the first draw it was very SMOOTH but, lacked significant taste after half the bowl and wouldn't stay lit.
I set a good amount out to dry and will try it again another day. Not disappointed at all though cause
I think the moisture content was hindering it and I'm sure the drier amount will prove to be very enjoyable to say the least. Wink
Now,you all happy? Some of you guys act like a 9 year old on Christmas morning having to open everything
within the first 3 minutes.5)

I've never seen one of them last for 3 minutes.
