Do you mean the Syrian stuff? Seriously, if you can find a way, get it. I've tried to source it and have not had the greatest success. I have tried it and it's a bit different than Cyprian. Other than that, Cyprian is about all you will find floating to the top these days. I have noticed, though, the differences between houses. That is to say folks like C&D, McClelland, Rattray, the Gawiths, Mac Baren, etc.

I guess it might even matter where in the world it was grown, processed, stored for how long, blah blah blah blah.......................

Hope this helps.

For straight Syrian you need to find vintage tins of this

http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/977/robert-mcconnell-pure-latakia

Good luck.... Wink

https://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/by-maker/mcconnell/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=3403 the description says Cyprian but it's actually Syrian, probably pre-1997 or so. I believe that was the last year Syrian was available on the open market.

I'd call Smoking Pipes to verify this (perhaps you have, Eric), K&K recently ran out of Syrian leaf. I used to smoke Solani Gold Blend and new production is definitely blended with Cyprian.

Here's a thread from someone on another forum that bought some recently.

well alright then. Pure Syrian is probably going to be impossible to get for the foreseeable future. I doubt Syria will be stabilized any time soon.

You would have to find a tin of McConnell since they're it for syrian on the consumer market. The rest is warehoused for Mac Baren and Mcclelland. Don't think they'll be giving any of that up.

There's this too.

Perhaps you could contact a guy named Pipestud. I think he dabbles in vintage and/or out of production stuff, maybe he could hook you up?

No, but try this-

http://www.pipestud.com/301/index.html

There's currently a tin of PCCA Full Balkan Reserve Syrian that goes back to 2000 for $45. If this is what you're looking for you'd best act fast since stuff like this doesn't last long on Steve's site.

I would just stock up on some 3 Oaks or Vintage Syrian and relax and enjoy. But that's just me. It's cool to have stuff to blend with but trying to find pure Syrian leaf at this point is tough to do. 10-15 years ago, no problemo.

Yup and yup, and I might add Ashton's Artisan Blend. Mac Baren's Vintage Syrian though is my favorite of the three...

Here are some links to a couple of posts I wrote in 2011 about Syrian Latakia blends:
My recommendations haven't changed since then. The best bets for flat-out Syrian Latakiaholics are:
  • MacBaren HH Vintage Syrian
  • Brebbia Latakia Flake No. 9
  • McClelland Rose of Latakia
...in that order. There are other blends that contain SyriLat,ósome of them are good smokesóbut they might not satisfy you if you crave a full-blow SyriLat experience.

The problem with Syrian Latweed is that it has been forced out of production by the Syrian state. In a joint venture with Jordan, Syria built the largest cigarette manufacturing plant in the world over a decade ago. Since then, the state has required that all Syrian tobacco production be surrendered to cigarette manufacturing.

Apparently there was also some pressure from environmentalists. The native oak and other fuel woods used to fire-cure the tobacco (which gives it its characteristic oaky, smokey flavor) were said to be "endangered", or some such thing. That might have been a factor, but I doubt it was the major reason for SyriLat's extinction, production-wise.

Whatever the reasons, Syrian Latakia has been out of production since about 2004 (as I recall), which means that the world's supply is finite...and shrinking. By all reports, MacBaren and McClelland own most of it.

Itís unlikely that youíll find any bulk quantity of SyriLat unless you happen to find a private stash owned by some piper. Greg Pease has tried in vain to buy SyriLat from every source he knows, but no dice. Itís just not available.

I can only say that MacBaren HH Vintage Syrian is a particular favorite of mine. It's a cryin' shame that Syrian latakia is unavailable now. Yet another reason to detest the feckless one.
