PostSubject: My New Rack Projects (pic heavy)    Sat Apr 16, 2016 12:29 am

I've been working on some new projects lately. I really enjoyed making the 1st pipe rack a couple months ago (My Homemade Pipe Rack) that I decided to make another design that I drew up. The 1st was made pretty much with what I had laying around the garage. I was going to try that again, but ended up getting some poplar to make a pipe rack with a storage area. I had some wood left over so I made a smaller version without the storage.
Here are a few pics from when it first started taking shape:

Dry fitted & needing some more sanding & shaping.

I cut the angles, but still dry fitted & needing final sanding.

Here is the smaller version without the storage area dry fitted after some sanding.

Almost ready to be stained, just a few more final touches.

I used the same old can of stain that I used on the other rack, Minwax Golden Oak.
Here are the pictures after the 1st coat of stain :

The backer of the storage area is a piece of birch plywood.

Small rack 1st coat.

I had to get more Golden Oak stain to do another coat, which turned out to be a lot darker. I guess the old can had gone off & the dark pigment had settled out. I really like the darker color & the way it brings out the grain a whole lot better. All that's left to do is put on a coat of wax or a lacquer finish, I'm going to do some test coatings 1st & then decide.

I really enjoyed making them, thanks for looking!

Aw, most of the wood I get is out of brush burn piles.. Just trying to stay frosty with my tools.

Thanks! I didn't want to make them too plain or too fancy, just functional.
