Tell me you won't learn something by watching this. We can agree to disagree on what that thing is.  Laughing

Yes I'm a bit of a fan too, and I did enjoy this one. Just shows what a bit of confidence can achieve.

After a few minutes of watching I decided to try not to have the the reactions the audience was having. He says it would be a funny story, I purposefully scowl for the duration. This contrarian behavior didn't last long on my part. Interesting commentary on social conditioning and human behavior. TED talks are always enjoyable, thanks for posting.

I enjoyed that.

Just remember it whenever a politician speaks.

OK, so I watched this but can't get the point. Unless it's to say that if you use slides, hold your hands in a certain way, talk slow and low, etc, your audience will think you are an expert on something. Is that about it?

Question

Cheers?

I think it's a spoof, not an actual TED talk. They're just making fun of the predictable format.

Well blow me down with a feather.

It did have me a little confused but I thought the penny would drop after a bit of reflection. I was looking too deep I think so it never did.

A spoof! Brilliant! Well played the chap on stage.

Like I said, fascinating stuff....

With a good sense of humor, it seemed to flow rather nicely. However, one must "bear in mind" that I am rather easily entertained....

Spoof or not, the ambiguity of the presentation warrants special attention. I made my wife watch it last night and we had a good 30 min conversation afterward about all manner of things. Coming from a theater background she knew immediately that the audience was in on the gag, since audience plants and manipulation are standard theater studies. If it was just a simple spoof, it was well done. But there are so many potential issues it raises it's hard to ignore them.

I believe this to be one of the more useful points to be taken from the parody.

Interesting points.

I have to say this has stimulated a great deal of thought and caused me to reflect upon my own practice. If it is a spoof it's easy to fall into the camp of looking upon the practices of the presenter with negativity, but as someone who has to present regularly I can identify with some of those traits (apart from the standing ovation and pointing!). I use a laptop, I use graphs, I use images, I'm dynamic in my positioning, I use my voice in a varied manner and so on. So does that make me 'fake' in some way?

Yes, both entertaining and thought provoking scratch
