I tried using wood rasps for the first time to speed up the process. I Kept taking breaks to watch football though, so I don't really know if it helped LOL. This was my first time working with this type of wood. Unfortunately part of the top brok off when I was putting the finishing touches on it, so I had to make it shorter than I would have preferred. I'm just happy that I finally got to get back in the garage!

Love the tones in that wood! I wonder how that would work for a pipe?

Thanks! I'm not sure for a pipe... Maybe as part of the shank? Decorative? It was fairly porous, so that's why part of it broke off Sad

Is the unique pattern in the wood caused by spaulting?

If it is spaulted wood I think you wouldn't want to use it for a pipe strummel.  It would likely be toxic to some degree.
