PostSubject: Favorite Blend Released in the Last Few Years?   Sat Jun 10, 2017 5:40 pm

Question for the BoB Hivemind: what's your favorite newly released blend(s)?

I've been out of the loop for ages now, and upon a recent trip to Iwan Ries I was bowled over by all the new releases and re-releases that have popped up since the last time I went browsing. The last new releases I remember being present for were Sam Gawith's four seasonal flakes (which I mostly liked), so it's obviously been a while. Just curious what folks have been digging in particular--and what has disappointed--since the sheer volume of new blends is a mite overwhelming!

For me, Mac Baren's Acadian Perique stands out. I open a tin and can't smoke anything else until it's empty. But perique tends to do that to me, if mixed with something decent. I do the same with Haddo's Delight, fresh, so take what I say with a grain of sodium chloride.

Is H&H Classic Burley Kake on the endangered list? I'd hate to see that one go, too. It's not a sophisticated blend, but it just tastes delicious. I can't think of others offhand, because most of my favorites have been around for decades, at least.

Second!

Big props for Mac Baren Old Dark Fired as well. Yah, it's four years old now, but still young enough to mention, yes? Oh, and Dunhill's Dark Flake.

I think my favorite re-release has been War Horse Bar; and my favorite new (alas, a v limited run) release has been C&D The Beast

Temple Bar

Take your pick, though Gaslight is absurdly good.

Your probably aware, but the flood of new blends was to beat the FDA deadline last August. It seemed like every week a new blend was coming out last summer!

Unfortunately, I have only been buying older blends that are going to disappear and have not ventured out to new blends for fear of falling in love with something that I can't continue to buy.

That being said, I am tentatively casting my vote for Chenet's Cake.

Just discovered the existence of this a few days ago. Waiting for a Jim Inks review before tasting, then a possible addition to the list just after hell freezes over.

Yup, that works for the kids when they roll their 'own'.... I haven't tried it yet myself, but I do like some of the fruity aros when the mood strikes.

Acadian Perique is actually one of the first blends I tried that convinced me I was indeed born for the pipe! Heck, if memory serves my first post on the BoB was about AP--and I'm with you on fresh Haddo's, too. I like it best with a little age on it, admittedly, but the young leaf has a character all its own.

Oh man this looks good--and reminds me I need to track down the last couple years worth of Christmas Cheer, if I can find any. Love those McClelland ginnies!

Love Old Dark Fired! Definitely one of the best new releases that dropped when I was paying attention. Though even when I was puffing but m on the reg I had to stick to modest bowls of it or it would kick my butt.

And good to hear an endorsement of Dunhil Dark Flake, that totally sounds in my wheelhouse!

I never had the original Warhorse but I do love me a good plug, will have to check it out! And while I don't usually go in for C&D tobacco (outside of GLP & Hermit) that Beast sounds all kinds of intriguing, both in terms of the rumsoaked perique and the whole Crowley connection. More's the pity it was limited!

I'm a big fan of Greg's blends and those all sound scrumptious. His crumbly plugs especially are always welcome in my cellar.

Yeah my excitement over the proliferation was quickly mitigated when I figured out the cause. Hellfire. I do love trying new blends and at the glacial pace I go through tins feel confidant enough with the state of my cellar that I'll definitely try to take advantage of this golden age of variety...right up until the hammer drops!

And I've got a tin of that Chenet's Cake aging that a brother gifted me a couple years back, if memory serves--will maybe let it ride until xmas to get a solid three on it before breaking the seal...

I felt like a chill grip on my chest. 'Don't,' I said, in a muffled voice.

'Forgive me. I -I have mourned so long in silence -in silence.... You were with him -to the last? I think of his loneliness. Nobody near to understand him as I would have understood. Perhaps no one to hear....'

'To the very end,' I said, shakily. 'I heard his very last words....' I stopped in a fright.

'Repeat them,' she murmured in a heart-broken tone. 'I want -I want -something -something -to -to live with.'

I was on the point of crying at her, 'Don't you hear them?' The dusk was repeating them in a persistent whisper all around us, in a whisper that seemed to swell menacingly like the first whisper of a rising wind. 'The horror! The horror!'

'His last word ó to live with,' she insisted. 'Don't you understand I loved him ó I loved him ó I loved him!'

I pulled myself together and spoke slowly.

'The last word he pronounced was ó Captain Black Grape Pipe Tobacco.'

I heard a light sigh and then my heart stood still, stopped dead short by an exulting and terrible cry, by the cry of inconceivable triumph and of unspeakable pain. 'I knew it ó I was sure!' . . . She knew. She was sure. I heard her weeping; she had hidden her face in her hands. It seemed to me that the house would collapse before I could escape, that the heavens would fall upon my head. But nothing happened. The heavens do not fall for such a trifle. Would they have fallen, I wonder, if I had rendered Kurtz that justice which was his due? Hadn't he said he wanted only justice? But I couldn't. I could not tell her. It would have been too dark ó too dark altogether.

Bringing back an old thread.

So many! The Mac Baren HH line is stellar (Old Dark Fired, Latakia flake, Bold Kentucky, Vintage Syrian) and the SPC Plum Pudding Special Reserve is divine!

That Grape has got Gramps hallucinating!

I merely had to step out the back door and lose my breakfast all over the shrubs.

The Standard Tobacco/Pennsylvania initial series: War Horse, Bengal Slices and the John Cotton No. I, Nos. 1&2 and Smyrna are standouts. The great RussO really scored with his collaboration with Mark Ryan when they created Acadian Gold - a stupefyingly tasty Virginia that puts most VA/Pers to shame. And his single barrel Perique Golden Triangle group: Paulina, Grand Point, South Vacherie and Belmont, as well as the 4 VAPers Russ created from each one.

Iíve heard a great deal about War Horse Bar and the Green. Several have told me I would be glad if I bought some. Iíll see if I get any birthday money this year.

While I do appreciate a good VA/Per the micro subtleties between one blend and its next door neighbor would likely be lost on me. I think there is more unexplored territory in the VA/Bur/Turkish rhelm. But what do I know. Itís really just personal preference for me.

Once again I must confess that while I have accumulated a considerable stash of the "newer" outings, I have only smoked one, DH's "Ye Olde Signe." I wasn't impressed when I first opened the tin. However, now, over two months later; it's tasting better...But it is not a "Dark Virginia" as the label states!!! FWIW cheers FTRPLT
