Hi All,

I've a Savinelli 320KS Hercules, which after about ten smokes, the laquer is starting to peel on the bowl above the stummel and a bit on the sides and bottom.

What's the reccomended way of dealing with this? ISO bath? Nail polish remover?  I'm more than comfortable with pipe refurb work by the by, so no need to go easy on your reccomendations, thanks.

Cheers

Tim

Maybe after 50 bowls it'll all be gone. Laughing Seriously, I've had isopropyl alcohol work really well. Depends on what the coating is, I suppose. Whatever it is, you could always use fine steel wool or even sandpaper. Just don't use anything coarse or you'll spend a week trying to get the scratches out. Thought these coatings went out with 1970s drugstore pipes. scratch

Take a picture of the pipe and send it to Savinelli before you use isopropyl. The distributor here in the US might replace the pipe. If you remember the retailer you purchased the pipe from give them a call as well. If the issue is not rectified " properly " you can remove the lacquer with isopropyl and then use three different grit type micro-mesh pads and leave natural, you'll like the end result. Just won't be shiny but will smoke well.
I've had this happen with the lacquered finished pipes Peterson released in the last 2 years on THREE different pipes. One was a friend and the two others I re-finished were recommended to me. I ended up hand sanding, re-staining and finishing the briar with White Diamond and pure Carnauba wax on my buffing wheels.

REMEMBER, The lacquered finished pipes are done usually to hide imperfections in the briar.
Good luck and please let us know the outcome.

Tim, I'd contact Savinelli first as well, they may just surprise you. Wink

As far as Lacquer finish, ISO won't touch it, if it truly is lacquer, lacquer thinner will remove it but, will also remove the stain.
I've never heard of covering an imperfection up with lacquer because in most instances when applied to a pipe it's fairly clear as well as shellac, don't see where that would do any good. Now they may PAINT the pipe with an opaque lacquer but, I don't think that's what Tim's talking about.

If it's a black stain/dye finish with lacquer there you would find a cover up to the briar. If your pipe has a light stain to the briar the clear coat is most likely not lacquer and is removable by sanding lightly.
First try getting in touch with Savinelli, just in case they replace the pipe.
If your handy that clear coat sands off quite easy. I've done it on 3 Pete's and they looked better than the day they were purchased once finished. Start with 400 grit to 600 grit and finish with a fine grit of 1000 or higher. For a super smooth finish to the briar you can use micro-mesh 4000 to 6000 grit.  If you have a buffing wheel white diamond and/or Carnauba wax will give the pipe a nice finish.

Thanks gents, I'll drop Savinelli a line and see what they say. I meant shellac, in my mind laquer and shellac are interchangeable, obviously they aren't.

If I get no joy from Savinelli, I'll dump it in iso for a day or two and use my sanding pads on it.

Cheers for that advice Richard, I know the fun of over doing it then trying to recover a gouge etc.

Cheers

Wow, just wow. Smoking Pipes customer service is simply awesome.

I sent an email to Savinelli stating I'd bought the pipe a while back from SP and asking if there was anything I could do to fix the peeling finish. They forwarded the email to SP who promptly emailed me stating that even though I'd bought the pipe in 2014 and that their warranty normally is only twelve months, they'd give me a store credit for the full value of the pipe as this was my first complaint in regards to a pipe.

So again, I'm stunned by the customer service Smoking Pipes display on a regular basis. Wished more businesses were inclined this way. Now whether to spend the credit on PAD or TAD?

Cheers

Good to hear!! Smokingpipes has superb customer service and I'm sure Savinelli made good for the issue. Get yourself a Savinelli 320KS Trevi pipe for about $80.00. You won't regret it... king

Did you have to return the original pipe? Or do you retain it plus get its value in store credit? If so, you ROGUE! Laughing

Richard,

Smoking pipes were very kind and let me keep the pipe as well. I plan on lightly sanding the shellac off and oiling it for a natural matte finish. Love me some nekked briar. Will post pics once done.

Cheers

Not surprising that SP rose to the occasion. They are, and continue to be, a class act.

I love you

Cheers,

RR

Gotta love Smoking Pipes work. I've always heard good news about their customer service, now I've experienced it first hand, I must say I'm delighted.

Now for some pipe porn.

Interestingly, the darkest spots so far are where the shellac was coming away.

There's some fine birdseye on that bowl, along with great straight grain. I'd say you did it a great service to remove that lacquer, Tim!

Cool

Cheers,

Thanks gents,

For some reason the pipe never clicked with me, hence only smoking it a few times since getting it in 2014. Since removing the shellac, I think I've smoked it almost daily. And yes, loving the grain in this one now, it should really pop once it picks up some colour.

Cheers

Tim, the 320 shape is very user friendly and it's no wonder you now reach for it so often. In fact my 320 Punto Oro estate will get some exercise tonight with some excellent McC 2015!

Very happy to know that post-shellac it's a go-to for you mate.

Cheers,

RR
