PostSubject: How Dedicated Are You?   Thu Oct 12, 2017 2:22 am

Dedicating a pipe to a specific blend is something I very rarely do. I do, however, dedicate some pipes to a specific genre of tobacco. I have some pipes that I only use to smoke a Lakeland blend, or a blend with Latakia, and of course there are pipes dedicated to Ginny Weed.

I've had a Mastro de Paja Calabash that I picked up about 4 years ago. While it performs well nothing really proved to be outstanding regardless of the genre or blend. In fact I only smoke the pipe a few times a year. This all has changed and now this average pipe has been dedicated to a specific blend. The reason for this sudden departure from the norm is the way it delivers the smoke from one of the finest blends ever created. JMHO. But from the first time I loaded this pipe, with this delicious well behaved blend, until now, I have been truly amazed by the difference not only with the pipe but also with the blend. The pipe's draw is perfect when loaded properly. I like my draw to be just a little on the tight side. In other words I like to feel some resistance when I puff. By packing the blend tightly I get the desired resistance. When I pack other pipes as tightly as I do with this one I have trouble keeping the blend lit. The pipe has an 1 1/2" deep chamber with the diameter coming in at 13/16". Having the blend packed tightly intensifies and deepens the flavor, and gives it a slower burn rate than I get when it's smoked in other pipes. The differences are quite noticable. It seems to be the reasonable choice, dedicating my pipe to this excellent blend. The blend? Pebble Castle made by our resident Wizard, the Ozark Wizard himself. My Mastro de Paja and Pebble Castle together add an extra measure of pleasure that's not only so surprisingly good but a rare occurrence. I surely wish that I knew all the factors and variables that make this paring so special.

Do do you have any pipes in your collection dedicated to a specific blend? Show us the pipe and tell us why it's dedicated.  Smile

AJ

I probably should have, but I'm too lazy to find out what pipe works best with what tobacco. I just grab whatever pipe strikes my fancy and smoke what ever tobacco strikes my fancy. They're all lat blends, so likely doesn't make much difference. I do keep track of the couple pipes I have that smoke blandly, and don't smoke them much.

I have a corndog that only sees Lakelands. Otherwise I mostly mix it up. I find the things I smoke seem to work well together. A reminder of a former bowl is likely to be pleasant.

AJ, I know it's odd but as I've stated before in other threads I have a specific pipe that's dedicated to a specific blend, not a specific genre. Example: right now I have 12 pipes dedicated to just J.P. Storm Front , 10 pipes to J.P. Crossroads and over 30 plus pipes that are for my different Lat blends. Also have individual pipes for each of my favorite Flake or cake/kake blends. I've found over the years if you smoke the same blend from the same pipe for me it's a much more enjoyable smoke.
Hey, that's me, I do know another piper that smokes Lat blends, Virginia or Burley Blends from the same pipe and he's just fine doing so. I tried to explain to him about ghosting and the way he smokes one can not enjoy the flavors of a good Burley or Virginia blend using a pipe that's also smoked Latakia or English blends. I even asked him..." can you still taste all of the different nuances and flavors of each individual blend '? His response..." I really don't give a 💩 crap 💩 , I just enjoy all the smoke"!! This guy still buys expensive blends but will never really appreciate any of them the way they were meant to be enjoyed.
Besides pipes laying in my draws dressed in their socks I have 4 large pipe racks out, which are all filled with pipes. Each side of the rack is labeled for a particular blend, but by now I know which pipe I want and where it belongs when finished.
This is the method I've used for years. Got tired of ghosting good briars. So, just call me anal retentive...... lol! lol!

I break in all my briars with Carter Hall then decide what blend will be dedicated to the pipe. Also my larger diameter chamber pipes are always dedicated to my flake blends and the smaller chamber pipes are use with my fine ribbon or shag cut blends. For me it's a simple method that's worked from the first year I started smoking a pipe and realized how darn easy it really is to ghost a good briar pipe. From that day on the word DEDICATED was used with every new pipe I purchased.

This! But not with the lat weed. I fancies a smoke, I chooses a blend and a pipe speakses to me. I guess a combination of not having a large enough stable to cover my various genre preferences and laziness puts me where I'm at.

Sounds like you've discovered a great marriage there though SR. Not surprisingly the Wiz's Pebble Castle seems to have a strong fan base. And a MdP too. I'm not sure why, but that's a brand that's always captured my attention. What's not to like!

I think I have but one pipe that sees only one blend, an aro. Not for long - the blend is no longer available. Now that I have typed that. I recall two others that get IRC 3* blue. Otherwise, my pipes are divided into aro/VA&burley/latakia.

I've done it, but ultimately, I find the idea to be less than optimal. To have a pipe that I can only smoke with this, or this or that, is not optimizing my dollar or joy of pipe smoking. I might not be in the mood for that tobacco, the tobacco type, or that pipe. That all means I'm going to smoke that pipe less often than if it was a purely great, all-around smoking pipe. Really, it might as well be one of the pipes that has a slightly too big of draw, or slightly too small of draw, or whatever flaw/reason I don't grab those particular pipes as often. It's not a negative consequence like that, but the consequence of being dedicated to something means I'm not going to smoke it as often as I could or might otherwise want. That truly is how I see it. When I periodically cull my pipes and rid myself of the ones I don't ever seem to smoke, the dedicated, though they smoke fine-to-great with something specific, get thrown in with the to-sell lot. I personally don't want pipes that limit me in any way. A note to this is that I'm not someone who enjoys, or wants, a great many pipes. I've been there. More pipes didn't make me more satisfied or more joyful of the hobby.

I always laughed at Alton Brown of Good Eats (anyone remember that food show?). He didn't want tools in his kitchen that only served a single purpose. If it wasn't a multi-tasker, it was out. If it didn't do more than one function well, it was out. A drawer of singular-function tools was just clutter. No thanks, and I agree.

Well, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that have tooooo many pipes. Some I've purchased over the past 49 years, some were gifted and I was lucky enough to have a WONDERFUL Grandfather that was part owner of one of the biggest pipe manufacturers on the East coast at the time. The building was in Brooklyn, NY. That's as far as I can go with that story, my Grandfather was a very private person.
Being lucky enough owning many pipes I've not smoked I get the pleasure to secretly 🎁 gift 🎁 a pipe from time to time to a fellow pipe smoker. But still the reality is if I see a pipe I like and it's cheap enough.....youbetcha I'd probably buy it. Well at least I use to before retiring due to being ill and now on a very tight budget. However, I still keep my eyes open for " that fabulous bargain " on eBay!!!
At times, especially when feeling better I make myself a pipe from Grecian or Algerian briar and I must say they're all great smokers as well as great looking pipes!!!

SO, KEEP ON PUFFING ON WHAT YOU ENJOY!!!

I'll never have money on Disability to have dedicated pipes. I'm getting ready to sell my two Petersons just to come with the money to buy new brakes. Mad

Right now, I really only have one pipe dedicated to a specific 'baccy. And that's my humble Stanny Legend 19 that I got new many years ago. Prolly cost me about a Benjamin or less then. And it has several fills. But it was made in Denmark and has always smoked fantastic.

I've come to dedicate this to McC bulk 5100 Red Cake, since it seems to love it and I enjoy it at least several times/wk. Something about it seems to bring out all that the 'baccy has to offer.

Sadly, I broke the stem on this about a yr ago in a klutz move when I dropped it on the driveway pavement while tapping it out. But fortunately Norwood Pipe Repair made me a new stem to the same general dimensions. And it's working out wonderfully. He had it back to me within 2 weeks for a very reasonable charge too!

Here's the pipe, although this one is not mine-

Cheers,

RR

Does that mean you'll smoke a Latakia blend in the same pipe you previously smoked a Burley or Virginia? I had a pipe buddy that smoked ALL of his blends using any of his pipes.

All of my pipes end up being dedicated to a type of tobacco. In the end, if a pipe doesn't shine with one type of tobacco or another it probably ends up getting sold. The pipes I've ended up keeping have stayed because they smoked something wonderfully. The biggest problem I have, really, is looking at a pipe I haven't smoked in some time and trying to remember what the heck it was that I liked to smoke in it scratch

That Mastro de Paja is a jewel. One of the few pipes I really regret selling was a straight, saddle stemmed MDP 3A one sun bulldog. Some of the best smokers ever produced, and under appreciated.

Well, to taste any good at all, everything needs a little latakia. I find that any non aromatic tobacco doesn't ghost enough to matter. Real tobacco doesn't ghost.Cool

I don't smoke much English these days. Maybe 1/20 bowls? When I'm not smoking it, I'm not tasting it ghost my #2015 or Luxury Navy Flake. I have no doubt that people taste ghosts, but I tend to not be one of them. Maybe that is part of my sniffer and tongue that aren't sensitive? I can't say. I do know I don't have any difficulty talking taste nuance and detail with my chef friend, my fellow whiskey fanatics, other coffee nuts, etc. I never had a customer come back to be at the tobacco shop and complain I was off base in my recommendations for tobacco or cigars. But fact is, and thank goodness, the whole ghosting thing is lost on me. It has to be egregious for me to really notice. I mean, like someone smoked rancid bayou mud in an estate pipe for me to get a solid sense of ghosting. As I already stated, the goal is to have pipes that smoke everything I like and want to smoke in them. Everything. Anytime. Period.

Zeno & Slowroll

Glad that way of enjoying your blends works out well for both of you, smoking in the same pipe.
If I did that I would know Latakia or an English blend was smoked in the pipe I'm now trying to enjoy a good Virginia Flake. I'd immediately pick up the ghost of the prior Lat or English blend. Everyone's different, that's what makes this hobby different for each individual.
