Just wondering if any of you knew what this might be? I think it is a salt cellar but the antique store owner is leaning towards a tobacco jar. Any ideas?

Sorry about the cruddy phone pics.†

Cheers

Tim

Honestly it could be either. Sometimes people would buy those with a specific purpose in mind and it didn't matter what the intended function was. My great grandmother was like that. A jar like that was for candy period didn't matter where she got it or what they said it was for. It was hers and by God it would have ribbon candy in it year round. Either way it's a super nice piece.

My Gramps was the same way;
Tins were for loose change and large jars were for his home made blackberry liqueur.

Iíve personally never seen a tobacco jar like that, but it would definitely be a cool one! Very neat!!!

Figural salt cellars would be, uncommon. Figural tobacco jars would be, common. At least from a time before plastics became so prevalent. But, as already pointed out. The purpose could have been anything. A wide variety of these figural jars are described as tobacco jars.

With the way the lid goes into the jar ceramic to ceramic I would'nt store any 'baccy in it as it will dry out pretty fast ! Twisted Evil
