Well I've had my second infusion of chemo and things Just aren't improving like they should. I see my primary Dr Wednesday. I've already had to go to the ER again to be put back on high dose steroids. Pretty sure I'm going to get passed off to the orthopedics specialist who's going to say it's finally time for a total replacement of one or both knees. The sounds coming from the left one are just stomach turning creaking and popping and it won't bear weight at all. Hoping for the best but honestly I don't see much choice. At least I'll be part cyborg when they're done lol.

Will do Rande. If the wife's knee replacement early last year is anything to go by my quality of life should improve rather dramatically. It'll be two months of why the hell did I let them do this to me but after that it should be an improvement. Now let's just hope they don't tell me I'm still too young for it.

My wife, 61, had both knees done this year, about 4 months apart. Right knee is doing great. Left knee is problematic. But, she says she's already much better than before surgery. My neighbor, who is about your age, I think 50, had his left knee done last year and it's doing great! So, head up, do it, and go down the road.

Tough reading that Jim, so I hope things improve soon for you. Those knee replacements will improve things significantly though. In fact, I'm that confident I think I'll book you a vest number for this year's London marathon. Wink

I haven't run in 30 years. I highly doubt that's going to change anytime in the immediate future lol. Tell you what you can run that marathon in my place though. The weenie walk in Hyde Park is probably more my speed.

Jim

Edit. My bad they call it a sausage walk lmao.

Jim

I've known 2 friends that had this done and it made all the difference to them. Kinda tough getting through the rehab, but after that it was clear sailing. Hope yours goes to plan.

Cheers,

RR

Sigh, the wait continues.........Dr cancelled my appointment at the last minute and pushed me off until the 12th. So hobble along until then. Actually looking forward to finally getting this done and being able to do some of the things I used to. Oh well what's a few weeks in the greater scheme of things right?

Best wishes for a quick operation date and a speedy recovery, Jim. Surgery is always a daunting idea in my book, but most of the time folks are very happy afterwards.

About this time last year I was having problems with my right hip.
I tried the shots and physical therapy.
My darkest day was when the PT showed me how to use a cane.
I saw an orthopedic surgeon last summer and he told be that I should make a decision about hip replacement
because my hip was only going to get worse. That was the day last July that I decided to have the surgery. While there were some difficult times after surgery there were people to help and things get better, but not over night.  I am very happy today that I had the surgery. My only problem is looking at the X-rays because I feel like the Terminator.

Bub, you look very happy in that pic.

May it always be so. And thanks for sharing!

Hang in there, Jim. I just escaped a shoulder replacement...for now. Like the other fellows have said, things have changed so much and the surgery is so much more advanced that the only thing to fear is the fear of doing it.
I'll be praying for you, brother.

Bud, really appreciate you sharing that. I'm glad you're happy with the results though.

Thanks for all the encouragement.
Really want to get it done and behind me at this point. We will see what the Dr says later in the week.

Jim

Jim, this is a Facebook support group that I found interesting:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/jointreplacementsupport/
I believe that all surgeons have the same goal but they seem to get there by slightly different routes.

Joint replacement is getting better and better as time progresses. There are some serious considerations that must be taken into account before having any joint replaced. I was slated to have my right shoulder replaced three years ago but after a lengthy discussion with my orthopedic surgeon I decided against it for the time being. He told me that there is a good chance that any serious infection within the body most likely will settle in the new joint and because the blood supply is diminished by a good measure treating the infection becomes very difficult, possibly resulting in having to remove the artificial joint and having to start all over. Anything such as dental problems that result in abscesses, infections from serious wounds, or any number of bacterial infections like pneumonia, and/or staff infections could cause serious disastrous complications. Though I still have very limited movement and tons of pain I decided to forgo the surgery until such time I can no longer control or bear the pain. Of course most have no issues, if they careful, and take proper precautions before any other procedures are performed. They get along fine for many years. Chances are are you may not encounter anything but blissful relief and that will be my prayer for you should you decide to have the replacement done. Please do your homework in addition to asking your surgeon about any possible complications. Smile

Last year, after my triple by-pass, my walking became more difficult and my knees got real painful. Went to the ortho surgeon and was told I needed BOTH knees replaced but tried some cortisone first but no deal. Was going to set up to get them replaced when this last lower intestine thing happened. Walk with a cane and walker now so gonna have to do something soon !! Age, ain't it wonerful!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
