PostSubject: Hurricane Florence   Mon Sep 10, 2018 9:17 pm

Well, been a rough year. Medical issues with family and we were really looking for a break. Rented a beach house in Topsail, NC for next week and if the storm path is correct, I'm sure that house won't exist. Hurricane Fran had the same path and totally devastated the island. Last year we stayed in a house there and the house had a picture book of the damage. It was unreal. Fran was Cat 3 and they are predicting Cat 4 for Florence. NC has had that happen since Hazel in the 50's and now there is a bigger population on the coast.

Today was nutz! One guy at work was looking at generators on Amazon Prime and as he was going back and forth they were selling out and he quickly clicked buy on one that was still 2 day ship. Raleigh area is famous for panicking and today was no difference. All the gas stations had lines like it was '77 gas crises. Bottled water doesn't exist in the area now, nor does bread, nor milk. Guess a lot of folks plan on eating french toast next week.

We are all well prepared here. Picked up a generator from the mother-in-law's place (she is living with us now) and have 2 coleman stoves. One is white gas and the other propane. Porches have been cleared of objects that can fly in the wind. I have two portable solar chargers for cell phone/tablets.

Sucks that vacation is toast this year . . . really needed it. At least I have a great stash of tobac to weather the storm. Hope the rest of you NC'ers stay safe this week!

They are saying a 12-14 foot storm surge. That will just go right over Topsail Island. This will be one for the history books if the track is correct.

Just simply don't understand the milk thing, as after you lose power and your refrigerator starts warming up, milk is the first thing that spoils. scratch

I know -- and here in the Piedmont we're much much more likely to lose power than water. Yet at the store, there were milk, eggs, frozen dishes, etc stacked in the carts (the water was mostly gone already) -- maybe they just plan on keeping power & not going out to eat? Me, if I have to, I can survive for three days on peanut butter & crackers and some canned food.

Anyway, here's hoping we don't get even tropical storm force winds, and it doesn't stall out and pour for three days. Best of luck to the others folks here in the likely-to-be affected areas.

I'm not by the coast, I am closer to Raleigh. Was suppose to go to Topsail Island next week which is now cancelled. Gas pumps ran dry last night and a few of the big guys got refueled so I got gas. Stores look ransacked. This is why you prepare well ahead of when you need it.

Yes, I got that but just the same it looks as though you're in the general path after landfall. All I know is that I'd want to be hundreds of miles away at that point!

Hope your precautions see you in good stead. You and the good DrT, as well as all the others here in the affected areas.

Back in '03 I was in the Pinehurst, NC area for my late Pap's memorial service, and the remnants of a hurricane (forget the name) were felt significantly where I was. High winds, trees down (one on the deck outside where I was staying), power outtage for over a day, torrential rains and flooding, etc. And as Pinehurst is well inland it was still affected. Nothing to take lightly, not that you are.

No Cheers,

RR

Looks like some excellent choices in bourbon and tobacco departments.

Be careful these storms are nothing to mess with.

Here in Charlotte it should wind down to wind gusts of 30mph, so everyone is still buying up all the milk and bread, which is still typical southern ignorance, milk is the first thing to spoil after the electric stops. Mad

Well, the sustained winds are here (15-20 mph) and will increase to around 27 Sat afternoon-Sunday afternoon. †If the gusts are strong enough, we will likely lose power at some point (hopefully not, but if they go 40-50 as is currently v possible it will almost certainly happen). †Best of luck those facing worse!

Lost power and cooked spaghetti on the Coleman for lunch. Gusty winds in Fuquay Varina. Got the generator going for the fridge and freezer. Hear Rocky Mount /Tarboro had duel tornadoes. Pretty sure Topsail Island had a bad time. Onshore winds at high tide. So much for vacation next week. Stay safe everyone and keep puffin!

Some local flooding & street flooding and power outages etc., but despite some flickers the power stayed on and the creek behind the apt didn't rise to really be too worrisome. Lots worse 30 miles south or east. Classes cancelled for today. Managed my usual piping; that's what yello-bole brylons are for!

I hope the others affected made it through ok
