Amazing Find While Rummaging in My Old Cabinet Empty
PostSubject: Amazing Find While Rummaging in My Old Cabinet   Amazing Find While Rummaging in My Old Cabinet EmptyThu Sep 27, 2018 6:40 pm

On a whim I cleared a path to my oldest and largest cabinet, aptly referred to as my “Cave of Wonders” cabinet. We’ve been in remodel mode for over a year and stacks of boxes have not allowed me near enough to even touch it let alone do the Open Sesame thing. But yesterday I built up my courage and waded into action.

It’s a five foot tall by three foot wide old VCR tape storage thing the face of which swings open like French doors.

I only opened the left side and among the first two things I pulled out were a mason jar and a jelly jar. The mason jar has 2.5oz of McClelland 2015 from 2008 and the jelly jar has 50 gm of McClelland Dark Star from the same year. The next two items were a pound each of C&D Night Train and Exhausted Rooster from 2010.  Holy Crap...I even found a couple tins of Momoyama!

Wheeee! This is FUN!

Everyone should dig in the cellar once in a while.

Every time I dig into the cellar I weep ever so slightly. Then I pull up my bootstraps and rotate leaf in totes. I'll never catch up.

I also came up with OLD canisters of Wilke blends like Old Master...Carole blended these, right? AND I found a tub of “Guy’s Favorite” from the long gone Affordable Pipes site...a Guy Wallace specialty.

And oodles of little jelly jars with super old goodies. It just gives you a warm glow. Um, but maybe that’s just the heartburn. lol

Absolutely. I was struck at how kind of prophetic that longing for Night Train was shown to have been. Kinda spooky too.

I won’t even mention rearranging the storage boxes in my bedroom...there for the past year due to our remodel...and finding numerous mason jars full of dark coils of Gawith goodies, bunches of old tins like half a dozen of the first tinning of Jacknife Plug...pound bags of this-n-that...and much more.

Had my annual physical this morning and was proclaimed to be “excellent”. Been a damn good day, all in all. I’m lovin’ it.

Well done, Blackhorse! We're still settling in after our move, so I'm not exactly sure where/what all my baccy is. After reading your post, I might have to do some digging!

And congrats on the physical! About the only thing I've been rated "excellent" on by my doctors lately is my number of billable hours lol!

So what will you be doing this winter?

My dr of many years is a very directive member of the female persuasion. She thinks I should give up my beloved pips. I’ve short cut the whole discussion by checking the “no” box for the Q, “Do you smoke?” The following question is, “How many packs a day?” So obviously the former Q refers to cigarettes, not briars. Last time I visited the doctor, she wasn’t available, so I was seen by a middle aged gent who started through the questionnaire with me. I commented on the ongoing debate I had with his female colleague. He goes: “Whaaat! You’re 75, your BP is perfect, you have no resperitory problems at all, you say your pipes relax you, and she tells you to give them up!?!? That’s insane!” My kinda guy. cheers

You are having some great check ups it sounds. I for one don't do it, I figure what I don't know won't hurt me, besides I can't afford it. But, I do go if I'm bleeding to death or if something falls off, so lo and behold I start coughing up blood.
Waited a few days to see if it would pass and it didn't. So I drug myself to a doc and they took x-rays and said it wasn't the TB blues but, didn't know what it was and suggested I go to a specialist. I could hear the cash register ringing and told her (the doc) no, so she gave me some Penicillin. I took it and then figured it all out, I had a upper sinus infection (probably from breath'en in too much briar dust) and the blood from it was running down into my throat and making me cough it up. Problem solved and infection gone thank you.
Oh, and BTW they told me I had 98% lung capacity, which surprised the doc knowing I'm a pipe smoker former 45 year cigarette smoker. Wink So keep on a smok'en those pipes sir but, wear a mask if your gona being grinding on briar!

Hmmm. I’m alive today cause I do an annual exam...have the colonoscopy thing done, yes to check the prostate...etc. My bro in law hated going in, didn’t forever, ultimately diagnosed with prostate cancer. Now on chemo ($180,000 treatment program). An annual checkup woulda caught it. Then there’s my sis in law that came down with lung cancer...never smoked, not once. Never saw doctors. Was only found out cause she was in a car wreck and they did a chest x-ray. She’s gone now. Didn’t take long.

Bad, depressing stories. See a doctor...save your life. Don’t want to lose you or any of the Bros here.

Sorry BH, aint gona do it, I seen what them doctors did to my stepdaughter this year with all there fricken chemo and radiation treatments. They told us it give her 5 years more when it only gave her a month or two of agonizing pain and humility. If I get it I get it, just let me die in peace with pain killers instead of robbing me of my dignity and my money.
I figure when its my time to go, its time to pack and go with it, I've suffered enough here on earth, its time for peace my friend.

Amazing Find While Rummaging in My Old Cabinet Empty
PostSubject: Re: Amazing Find While Rummaging in My Old Cabinet   Amazing Find While Rummaging in My Old Cabinet EmptyWed Oct 03, 2018 9:48 pm

OTOH I had my brush with mortality last month. My wife woke me up in the middle of the night and said, “you’re burning up.” Also, I made zero sense when I tried to talk, and I couldn’t stand up. She called an ambulance. Got to the hosp and the above symptoms continued — BUT all the normal tests , even BP, came back normal, imaging came back fine, all organs of note were fine. So they kept me for 48 hr observation. Turned out, the day of the med incident, I’d stopped by the pharmacy in the local mega mart to get a flu shot. They said I was also just about due for two other vaccines. So I got all three shots — saved time! — and 12 hrs later I’m an effin zombie. Doc asked, “What the hell did you do that for?” “Never bothered me before,” I replied. “You weren’t 75 before,” he said. My takeaways: If possible do not get vaccines in a place where there is no bonafide medical staff. But if you must, call your own doctor’s office for advice first. And always keep your own record of scheduled vaccines, when you had them and exactly when they are due. In my case, I was very lucky my missus called the ambulance, plus I heard my daughter the APRN out in the hospital Hallway. I thought I was hallucinating, but, no, she came in and sweet talked her way in to check my reports, test results and treatment. (She was an ER Nurse for six years and was known as Nurse Bossy.). They pronounced me dumb but okay, released me, and the first thing I did at home was take a shower. Next, I smoked some Plumcake in a new Lacroix Pot out on the deck. Good as new. Well, not brand new, restored to my former state, I mean. Be careful out there brothers. The older you get, the more hostile the world becomes.
