PostSubject: Greetings! I am new here.   Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:58 pm

Hello, my name is Dave and I live in the high desert of southern California, USA. I bought my first briar pipe in 1990. I am smoking it as I type this message. I have gone back and forth between cigarettes, cigars, and pipe smoking for years. I didn't get serious about pipe smoking until last year. I completely stopped smoking cigarettes and dabbling with cigars. I am now just a pipe smoker and loving it!

My first pipe is a Peterson 2nd billiard apple.

My second pipe is an estate pipe that could be at least 60 years old. It is made by Royal Vintage of London. It is a squashed apple with a skinny stem. It is my favorite pipe. I bought it for $2.50 on Ebay.

My third pipe was an old Viking. I wasn't very satisfyied with it, so I gave it to a friend who is new to pipe smoking. I told him that if he didn't want it anymore to give it back to me. I did kind of miss it after all.

My fourth pipe is a Peterson Churchwarden. I received it by mail with a broken shank. I was so anxious to smoke it that I tried to fix it. Bad move. The company wouldn't send me a new stem, so I came up with another way of making it work. I went down to the hardware store and bought a brass tube-like fitting. I glued the fitting onto the stem where the old shank was. It looked like it would work, but it was still too loose of a fit. I used to be in a marching band of pipers(bagpipes), so I used the same technique for sealing the drone pipes. I used some heavy gaged thread and beeswax. It was a success!

My fifth pipe is a wizard churchwarden pipe from MacQueen pipemakers. It is a fantastic pipe with the coolest smoke. I love it!

My sixth pipe is made by Viking from Denmark. It is new and smokes well. It usually is my first choice each day, but rotation matters.

My seventh pipe is a clay pipe that I found in an antique store. It had a hunting theme to it including the fox and hounds. The horse and rider were damaged, so I removed the theme from the pipe. I only paid $3.00 for it. It smokes okay I guess. It is my least favorite pipe.

My eigth and most recent pipe is a colonial tavern clay pipe. I like it, but I still prefer briar to anything else.

As far as the type of tobacco that I smoke...I first began with the Tinderbox blend Wilshire. It is still my favorite. I have bought other aromatics like Jamaican Rum, Very Cherry, Old Toby and Longbottom Leaf from the shire series. Those are nice. One day I might venture out into the english blend territory, but for now I'll keep it sweet. ;p

Welome, Dave!

My father is a piper, and I've seen that technique in practice. Glad it transferred to the other kind of pipes!
