I've noticed that a few members on the boards post lyrics to songs in their signature or as a retort to questions posed.

So now i ask what are some of your favorite lyrics? and why are they? cheers

Also what are some of your most hated song lyrics? Mad

Finally, are there any lyrics out there you have heard that just boggle your mind as to what they mean? confused

Please feel free to contribute links or lyrics and to poke fun at Britney Spears!

Here goes with some of my favorite lyrics:
A Rainy Night in Soho
By Shane MacGowan (1991)

I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell

I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song
To all those little girls and boys

Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The gingerlady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the fist time
I never think about the last

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

I just find it a beautiful love song that strikes a cord with me and my life long love affair with firey redheads and celtic music. Shane McGowan is one of my faves.

As for some terrible lyrics i have to attack the early work by Tim McGraw "Refried Dreams" nuff' said.

And some lyrics that to this day i really don't quite get how about "Stairway to Heaven" I know the words but have yet to try and figure out what it means. If someone could give me some cliff notes that would be great!

Great thread ST cheers

One of my all time favorite bands is the little known (at least in the USA) band (or bands counting that they have actually two distinct 'incarnations') is Marillion. They have written at least two songs regarding the struggles in Ireland, which separately or together have much to say. These two songs easily make my top 40 both for music and lyrics:

Easter referencing of course the 1916 Easter Rising

Forgotten Sons which deals with the IRA and similar organizations which either fuel them or fight them.

Easter LIVE 1990

Forgotten Sons LIVE (probably mid 1980's)

My categories for WORST EVER!

CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE lyrics - Muskrat Love

Muskrat, Muskrat, candle light
Doin' the town and doin' it right in the evenin'
It's pretty pleasin'
Muskrat Suzie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug at a Muskrat Land
And they shimmy, Sam is so skinny

And they whirl and they twirl and they tango
Singin' and jinglin' a jangle
Float like the heavens above
Looks like Muskrat Love

Nibblin' on bacon
Chewin' on cheese
Sam says to Suzie
Honey, would you please be my Mrs
Suzie says, yes, with her kisses
Now, he's ticklin' her fancy
Rubbin' her toes
Muzzle to muzzle
Now anything goes as they wriggle
Sue starts to giggle

And they whirled and they twirled and they tango
Singin' and jinglin' a jangle
Floatin' like the heavens above
Looks like muskrat love

AND

Michael Buble: Me And Mrs. Jones lyrics

Me and Mrs Jones, we got a thing going on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong to let it go now

We meet ev'ry day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the jukebox plays our favorite song

Me and Mrs, Mrs Jones, Mrs Jones, Mrs Jones
We got a thing going on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong to let it go now

We gotta be extra careful
That we don't build our hopes too high
Cause she's got her own obligations and so do I
Me, me and Mrs, Mrs Jones, Mrs Jones, Mrs Jones

Well, it's time for us to be leaving
And it hurts so much, it hurts so much inside
And now she'll go her way, I'll go mine
But tomorrow we'll meet at the same place, the same time
Me and Mrs Jones, Mrs Jones, Mrs Jones

Will you all please join me, buckets in hand for a fine vomiting session?
lol!

Great Idea Smokey Tweed.
I like the crazy & mad stuff so here is a favorite from one of the greatest TV shows ever. Earnest T. Bass was trying to court Charlene Darling on an episode of The Andy Griffith Show and he sang to her this song:

Old Aunt Mariah, jump in the fi-ah,

Fire too hot, jump in the pot,

Pot too black, jump in the crack,

Crack too high, jump in the sky,

Sky too blue, jump in canoe,

Canoe too shallow, jump in the tallow,

Tallow too soft, jump in the loft,

Loft too rotten, jump in the cotton,

Cotton so white she stay there all night.

Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didnt hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt.
And I washed my face and combed my hair and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my brain the night before on cigarettes and songs that I'd been picking.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid cussing at a can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street and caught the smell of someone's Sundays frying chicken.

And it took me back to something that I'd lost somehow along the way.
On a Sunday morning sidewalk, wishing Lord that I was stoned.

Oooooh I got one! My grandpa used to sing me this song:

Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror cause I get better looking each day.

To know me is to love me; I must be a helluva man.
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble, but I'm doing the best that I can.

I used to have a girlfriend, but I guess she just couldn't compete with all these love starved women who keep clammoring at my feet.
Well I probably could find me another, but I guess they're all in awe of me.
Who cares?!? I never get lonesome cause I treasure my own company.

Well, the honky tonks in Texas were my natural second home.
Where you tip your hat to the ladies and the rose of San Antone.

I grew up on music that we called Western swing.
It don't matter who's in Austin. Bob Wills is still the king!

You want me to act like we never kissed.
You want me to forget, pretend we'd never met.

and I"ve tried, and I've tried, but I haven't yet.
You walk by and I ......

You tell me to find someone else to love.
Someone who love me to, the way you used to do.

But each time I go out with someone new.
You walk by and I.....

I like both Kris' version and Johnny's and yes Johnny changed it up some. Both men have clearly written some true classics. I like Johnny's covers of Dylan, and even Nine Inch Nails!

Johnny was easily one of the greatest performers of the 20th century, saw him 6-7 times in concert growing up, my Mom was a HUGE fan! His shows were events!

Kris has been huge in his own right, both music and film. He's lived an amazing life, turning down a teaching spot at West Point, Rhodes Scholar, quite the man ...

one of the greatest regrets in life will be that I never got to see/meet him in person. Kris is one of the best song writers that we almost didn't no about had it not been for the Highwayman tour/album.

Help me make it through the night!?!? You can't beat that for song writing. Have you heard the song Kristoferson by Tim McGraw???
You know what's weird? Johnny Cash is what my dad used to play that I couldn't stant back when I was a kid. Now I can't get enough. I mean I can sing ( and often do) the obsure collection... Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Kris write me and bobby mcgee?

btw, that's not the Patsy Cline Version. The version I'm singing I heard in New Orleans, two part harmony. If I can find a band that will let me, we harmonize it.

Shake that ribbon from your hair.
Shake it loose and let it fall,
laying soft against my skin like the shadows on the wall.
Come and lay down by my side till the early morning light.
All I'm taking is your time...
Help me make it....

There is a GREAT Western Swing band, used to be out of Ft Worth, called Cowboys and Indians, they'd have anywhere between 5-15 people in the band, depending who could get away from work for the gig. IF they ever have a gig down your way, they are a MUST SEE act! If you've seen them (my last time was at the now closed "Velvet Elvis" in Dallas) then you'll know what I'm talking about. I didn't know what Western (or Texas) Swing was when I first saw them, and man, they completely won me over to the genre.

Without question Bob Wills is still the KING! cheers

We have a member here who has played Austin many times, probably played down your way too. he now lives in Batavia, NY but knows a good bit about Western/Texas Swing.

OK. You got me.

PeeBee's posted a few that have been fantastic (IMHO) but the absolute best I've ever heard were written by a minstrel genius from around Westchester Penna. named Rob Dickenson, who's hovered on the edge of commercial awareness for coming up on 40 years now. Lived hand-to-mouth playing in his band for a couple of those years -- best musical experience I've ever had (this included maybe 15 years of symphony gigs before packing the whole thing in).

An excerpt from The Wallenda Song. About being a performer, tripping off the Wallena Family (high wire circus act).
Rob Dickenson wrote:
In great bigtops it's been mentioned
(Say Wallenda -- say right now !)
Tightropes they give, and you step with tension
(Oooh net -- are you below me now ?)
Hands will clap 'til they sound like thunder
Beneath this canvas night
Spotlights burn 'til you begin to wonder
Are they seeing me right ? . . .

It takes a slip to make you giggle
Was that crack a smile ?
Looks like we'll have to hammer and chisel
In our inimitable circus style . . .

Another excerpt (a lot further "out there") about the frustration of dealing with the commercial music biz that operates on the principle of promoting and exploiting sheer sh*t :
Rob Dickenson wrote:
First it's catapulted -- Money and Boston and Century all the time
(Oh Lord - Deliver me a silver mine !)
Isn't it a pity how it creeps out of the city like a bad hand on a leg !
I've got jackhammer fists and knots in my wrists
How could anyone not resist ?
I've got to kick down doors like I've knocked down walls
since it all began . . .
More music biz :
Rob Dickenson wrote:
"Is this another failure ?"
A flashbulb pops
A hand is on your shoulder
Sneaky Art shows up . . .

"Ohio" Neil Young

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
