Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to get flown into a remote locale to fish a sweet little secret creek that holds huge native trouties. I caught this 24" beauty on a streamer pattern, took the photo, then promptly released it. I then loaded up a bowl of Exhausted Rooster, sat down in the fall sun, and proceeded to contemplate being and nothingness while slowly sipping on my friendly little pipe. It was grandiose!

Cool! The above photo was my 500th post! Seems apropos, mais non? ON a side note, I am planning to float the Kenai River on Sunday, targeting HUGE fall rainbows. The potential to get into a 30 inch hawg is pretty high. Will report back with the details!

This time of year for fall rainbows in Alaska, we fish almost strictly sub surface, with beads (ie salmon egg imitations), streamers, and flesh patterns. The trout here do eat aquatic insects from time to time, but with our rivers so full of salmon, the vast majority of their diet comes from spawning salmon, and the flesh of dead salmon that are spawned out. That is how our fish get so big. (The state record rainbow is something like 42 pounds..)
