As someone who loves Pete's and has endured years and years of dogging them on every board you can think of, I now feel quite vindicated cheers

I've always said Pete's are very good pipes for the money.

The point I think was that the high grade Petes are some of the best pipes on the market...

The Straight Grains are supposedly handmade.. I'm unsure about Their other high end models.

I understand the article, and judging from the POTY models I have the mid range are very good pipes, no Pete I own has a fill.

Royal Irish are my favorites of all the Pete lines, extremely well made.

I also have three system pipes... one has more fill than wood... one has sandpits but no fills.. and the other is smooth as a babys bottom... I haven't examined them under magnification but I subscribe to the 'if I can't see it, it aint there' theory when it comes to fills.

Yup, I wrote that about three years ago as a post to the Knox board. Still stand by every word. Cool

No idea about the site it's on now, though. Internet magic, apparently.

Amazingly, no one (that I know of, anyway) has taken it out of context. (Which is essential to its meaning: that my experience with Peterson's is limited to---and my opinion of the brand vs. Dunhill is limited to---the five premium lines in their catalog that do not have fills.)

In fact, about a month ago I spotted a pipe for sale that flipped my PAD switch for the first time in two years. It's a Pete. cheers

I've got a few more than I need and its hard to upgrade what you're happy with..

Now I need a bigger rack. Rolling Eyes

BTW, LL how did that Dunhill that you discovered a "fill" in ever turn out? Now that Knox is no more, I don't think I ever heard about the resolution or outcome?

Great review LL. I only own one Dunhill, a 1950's vintage Dunhill Shell Bulldog and at least six Pete's. I think that they all are very good quality pipes and smokers. Although I don't own any of their high grades I have two Roslare's, a 2006 POY and three of the Saint Patrick's Day (2002, 03 and 04) pipes. My untrained eye cannot find any "fills" on the two Roslare's. The only problem, per say that I had was with the Saint Patrick's Day pipes that were all dip stained so I lightly sanded out the inside of the bowl. They have all given me years of great smoking.

The pipe was sent to Dunhill U.S.A., and they agreed it was a fill. They in turn sent it to the London shop who (in essence) said "We can't tell for sure what it is, but WE didn't put it there. It's either an unidentifiable natural inclusion of some sort, or putty applied after it left our shop."

Since the pipe was bought directly from the distributor at a show, the latter explanation seemed unlikely.

Since the only way to determine the fill's composition would be via destructive testing (dig it out and send to a lab), AND Dunhill Inc. would continue to insist they didn't put it there no matter what it turned out to be, nothing more was done.

Dunhill U.S.A. wasn't just helpful, but enjoyable to work with. They wanted to get to the bottom of the mystery as much as I did. Dunhill Inc. mostly seemed flustered and insulted. (I was--and remain--convinced that the people I talked to never condoned putting fills in pipes at any time, and would deal harshly with anyone they caught doing it.)

Net answer? It's still a mystery. (And yes, I still have the pipe.)
