PostSubject: Burley Flakes?...   Sun Sep 20, 2009 11:58 am

Yesterday a buddy of mine came down for a visit and brought some incredible 30+ year old straight Burley Flake by Peretti's. I'm looking for a great straight burley flake which can be bought perferably in bulk that I will age for many years. I've already given Wessex "Burley Slice" a try with mixed results. I find it either too moist in the tin or too dry after being left out for a time....

Anyone have any great burly flake recommendations?

While it is decidedly more than just Burley (being also Va and Perique) I can't say enough good about C&D Exhausted Rooster ... wonderful stuff cheers

$72.00 per pound is a little steep for me Dad. I may need to hold a telethon to help finance it! Perhaps I'll call it "Flakes For Flake"???? cheers Seriously, think I'll get a few oz's of it to try....

Hey Ken, do you have to special order this from Peretti's? I see no mention of it on their website. The reviews on TR sound interesting.

You have to ask for it. It's not listed on the site. I need to go looking and see how many years is on some I bought. Not that many yet I think.

Tobacco: Lots of burlies, some balkans and the occasional Va or Va/PER. I like some aromatics but use them sparingly.
Favorites are: Wilderness, Old Joe Krantz, Exhausted Rooster, Filmore, Chelsea Morning.
Pipe: Savinellis, Doctor Grabows, Gatlinburlier.

For my money, I'd say the best available tobacco of this type is Solani's Aged Burley Flake. It's a little like Wessex, but far richer and with a lot more nicotine. I dislike Wessex's product, as I feel it's way too mild in all departments. Solani is pricey, though.

Hearth and Home's Classic Burley Kake is nice, too, but it's a mild aromatic rather than a straightforward burley flake, so it doesn't appeal to everyone. If the prospect of a little anise topping doesn't bother you, though, I also recommend it.

Mac Baren's Navy Flake is a Burley flake.

Peterson's Irish Flake is a dark-fired "Kentucky" Burley flake. Stout and heavy!

Finding a bulk burley flake is a tall order, Doc. The only one I know of is C&D's Safe Harbor and maybe Exhausted Rooster. Some other flakes with burley not mentioned are Orlik's Dark Strong KY (no longer made though some say that Heinrich's Dark Flake is the same), Butera's Kingfisher, and Kendal Cream. Good luck in your quest.

Tobacco: Peretti blends, especially D-7485, Cuban Mixture, British Blend, and Park Square, C&D American/English and Burley blends, Boswell's (several blends), Hearth and Home (several blends), P&W Nut Brown Burley and Vermont Maple Cavendish, PS Balkan Supreme, and ERRd. I have a lot of favorites!
Pipe: Jan Zeman. I also like Petersons, Savinellis, Karl Eriks, and MM cobs.

I would also suggest the C&D Safe Harbor Flake. They had some problems with the early batches but the later ones are tasty indeed.

I hope they are pressed harder than their other flakes. I have some on the way.

I see there are 3 new burley flakes from C&D. They just posted them on SmokingPipes yesterday.
