PostSubject: Holmes, Basil Rathbone Question   Fri Dec 25, 2009 11:20 pm

I have been watching the Sherlock Holmes movie marathon on TCM and I was wondering if anyone knows what make of pipe that Basil Rathbone is usually smoking in the Holmes movies that he plays in? It almost looks like a Dunhill LC to me.

I did a quick search and didn't really come up with anything.

Thanks!

Hey Mark,

I'm 99% sure Rathbone smoked Peterson's pipes exclusively in all of his roles as Holmes...

I do believe you are right. Peterson even has a "Rathbone" in it's Holmes series.

I think that at least in some of the dozen+ SH movies that he made, he smoked a Peterson line that was later enshrined as either the Peterson Return of Sherlock Holmes "Rathbone"

http://www.peterson.ie/pipes/return-of-sherlock-holmes.html

or the Original, from Sherlock Holmes collection.

I'm sure that the Peterson/SH buffs in this forum will be able to help us pin it down or identify the correct one.

I don't know much about Rathbone, but it sounds to me like he smoked the superior brand. Very Happy

Thanks for the responses. Rathbone may have been primarily smoking a Peterson in a lot of the films but I swear, in the Hound Of The Baskervilles the pipe he is smoking looks like an LC to me. Maybe someone can pin it down for sure.

...so why is it that Peterson cannot accurately reproduce Basil's pipe as seen in the movies? Yes, there are several "Holmes" series pipes but no one pipe in the series looks like a match to Rathbone's. Some system pipes and the Mark Twain shape come close but fail to be exact matches. You would think it would be a decent idea and a good seller for Sherlockian's.

I agree Lou! Most of the pipes I see Rathbone smoking looks very much like a classic Dunhill LC or similar variation of a full bent billiard.

Just came across this site http://www.basilrathbone.net/

Looks like he has Petersons (based on what looks like the Peterson nickel military fittings) and some others.

Enjoy.

Mr. Rathbone may have had a Peterson or two, but to the best of my knowledge, both on-screen and off, he preferred Parkers by far...in most publicity photographs, the pipe he is smoking is identified (mistakenly) as a Peterson; however, 99 percent of the time, it was a Parker. Incidentally, the base for Pipeworks and Wilke's "Rumcake" blend was created for Basil Rathbone.
