PostSubject: Pipe smokers handbook   Tue Mar 23, 2010 1:40 pm

Hi there
Does any one have one of the old pipe smoking handbooks that you used to be able to buy - I did have one but believe they are now out of print. I believe mine was misplaced during a house move last year.
Alternatively does anyone know where I may be able to get one?
Regards
Ken

Ken,

I can't count at least fifty of these that were produced by various authors and pipe companies alike. Can you be more specific as to what you're looking for? Are you thinking of an actual book like Carl Weber's "Guide To Pipes & Pipe Smoking" or Rick Hacker's "Ultimate Pipe Book" or are you thinking of one of the small 1950's era brochures/booklets available from the major pipe and tobacco companies?

Hi
I can't remember who it was by but it was more of a pamphlet than a book. Probably about 25-50 pages in A5.
Had a list of previous pipe smokers of the year in it and a list of pipe smoking clubs in the UK divided by region at the back.
Does that help?
Ken

Yes. You're thinking of the "Pipe Smokers Handbook" put out yearly by The Pipesmoker's Welcoming group of the UK. They were group of tobacconists who tried to encourage pipe and tobacco related tourism to shops in England. Unfortunately this group and it's handbook no longer exist. They were a casualty of the antismoking movement.

The opening paragraph mentions the pipesmokers handbook and dates published, also who printed it,,,,might be a starting point

Here's a current auction listing from e-bay which contains an issue of the welcome guide as well as some 1980's PCCI mags.
