PostSubject: Question about Estate Pipes!!   Tue Mar 23, 2010 10:53 pm

Good evening all,

i have come into ownership of a few estate pipes, the dilemma though is that i am not a hundred percent sure as to the contents previously smoked by the original owner. i have cleaned them out well and have done a salt treatment but am not sure if this would be sufficient enough to get rid of any chemicals possibly left in the bowl. The owner, from what i know has smoked quite a bit from these pipes but not always tobacco, so im skeptical. i don't plan on keeping a pipe i cant smoke due to previous contents, but i do fancy their shape and simplicity. so, if anyone knows of a surefire way to clean pipes or "purify" them from "unfavorable contents" please advise. any help would be appreciated. i don't know how long chemicals from illegal substances can stay in the bowl of a briar but i do know these pipes haven't been used in the last fifteen years. again, any help is greatly appreciated. if these aren't salvageable i'll get rid of them but i rather do my best to clean them up and hopefully use.

Your best bet may be to send it to a professional pipe restorer; I imagine the gents here can recommend someone from personal experience.

Email Patrick Callaghan, the owner of Jon's Pipe Shop in Urbana, IL. Pat has been in the pipe/cigar/tobacco biz for a long time and is a retired IL state police detective, plus a heck of a nice guy. He'll know if there's risk. Order some of his latakia mix "Smoking Mixture" while you're at it - great stuff!

And if you can't keep the pipes, at least ream them out and make some brownies.

Many years ago I worked for a Ford dealership. I had a friend there who was the places head service manager. He was a pipesmoker allright and smoked in the office everyday. His mixture was 1/2 cherry tobacco and 1/2 hydro weed. He was always in such a great mood! Laughing
