gets my vote, j

MUCH easier to read and navigate, imo

Looks less artsy and "modern," but modern doesn't care much about easy to read/see/navigate. Sometimes clarity and contrast is the best answer.

Yeah sorry about the surprise reformat. It actually surprised me, it took effect before I even hit Save.

This code should be way less buggy. We still have most of the functianlity and I'm hoping the back end stuff will work now. It was driving me crazy before.

The bonus is that some of the features I was worried about losing seem to still be there. Like the easy picture hosting buttons and what not.

What's everyone else think?

Very nice JH. Much easier on the eyes. I love the pipe smoking silhouettes.

Nice! I thought I walked in to the wrong joint at first, but I'm liking it. Posters information is on the RIGHT side of the board now(meaning the left)! Much easier to get around in now.

That guy does look like Abe. It's not, just some random picture I traced an outline of. It's because I'm not good at it that it came out looking like Abe. Laughing

As far as the banner goes I'm working with the artist hazmat introduced me to so we can get something really nice up there. I couldn't get the banner thing to work before the switch over to the older software so I just wanted to put something up so I knew it would work.

PostSubject: New format   Fri Dec 14, 2007 8:18 pm

J-man:

There were a few things I liked about the original format. Maybe when they get that version out of beta it will work better. I really liked the large embedded composer pane. This new one is still way better than the tiny one we had on the Knox board, but the big one was best. Is there any way to make the size of the composer pane user-configurable? As I mentioned in another post, it's a real pain to scroll the doggone thang. But that's not a real high priority. I can always compose in TextEdit and do a copy/paste.

One other piss-ant gripe of approximately zero consequence in the grand scheme of things: The absence of the "Mr. Green" emoticon. I don't know what it was supposed to mean, but I used it as a symbol for "big ol' shit-eatin' grin". No biggie that it's missing, though.

This new format has a couple of serious deficiencies, from my perspective:

  • The icons linking to each members's Profile and PM (and e-mail and website links, for those who show them) are completely missing from the bottom border of each message. Bummer. For example, when I need instant access to the most recent words of wisdom by all Ukrainian members of the board, there's no substitute for that link to their profile pages and the "Find all recent posts..." link. Exclamation

  • Another thing I liked about the original beta format was the fact that it displayed subject lines for each post as a big honkin message header that was an active link to the post. The ability to copy the precise URL of the individual posts is a very handy tool—one that's completely missing from this new format (unless I'm missing it). On the Knox board, the message URL was available as a "Copy link location" item in a contextual menu item in my browser by doing a click+hold (in any Mozilla browser for OS X, right-click or control-click for other browsers/platforms) on the little "Post" icon to the left of the Subject line.

Here, the contextual menu for the "Post" icon is missing the "Copy link location" contextual menu item. I used some of those links to specific posts in messages I composed under the original beta format. (I could copy the links from the active-link subject lines in the original beta format.) I just checked those earlier posts, and the links to individual posts still work, so obviously this version of phpBB is still keeping track of the URLs for the individual posts, but now I don't know how to access the URLs in the new format. It'd be great to have that functionality back again.
I'll say this: The new format loads way faster than the original. I was doing flashbacks to the dial-up days for a while there, but this new format is snappy as a teenage daughter at that time of the month when all wise men stay outa the way, if they know what's good for 'em. Wink

Also, we've gotten great entertainment value out of that new feature wherein you turned off TeeJay's ability to use emoticons, but you prolly oughta turn it back on for him again. Enough is enough. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

(Just kiddin', Teej. They don't call me jocolor for nothing.)

I concur with the Veetmeister about

Also about turning TJ's friends back on for him. Italians are very social creatures.

If someone can show me what Mr. Green looked like I can probably find him and add him back.

There should be buttons on the bottom of every post for people's profile/pm/website still. Although the private message icon reads "mp" I think that is from the French version of the board - message privé

Let me know if they aren't showing up Vito.

The others are probably version specific but I'll look into it more. I think I stated it before but one of the downsides of it being hosted by someone else is I can only change what they allow. If hadn't been a lazy SOB and put it up myself I could have edited all the source files directly and made pretty much any change we needed. Oh well, maybe I will someday. Laughing

I don't know what's going on with TJ's emoticons. Are they grayed out TJ or just not even showing on the screen?

Jason,

The whole rat pack of e-cns are in their little box, in living color,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just laughing at me. When I center the cursor over one, all I get is a box of dots outlining that e-guy. They just don't transfer to my text. All profile options are properly set, smileys are enabled, Java script settings are cool.

Someone's messin with the king.

So when you click on the whatever emoticon you want nothing happens? I'm guessing it could be a problem with cached files for the editor then.

If you are in Internet Explorer go to Tools - Internet Options, on the window that pops up click on the Delete Files in the Temporary Internet Files section. On that window make sure you put a check next to Delete all offline content then click OK. It may take a bit to clear everything out. Then click OK to get rid of the Internet Options box and then refresh the page and try to make a post with emoticons.

Jason:

They weren't there when I began writing that message, but they're showing up now. All is cool. Cool

I'll fetch you a copy of Mr. Green later. I've gotta git gone now for some fambly stuff that will keep me off the board until much later tonite.

I'll leave TJ's emo issues in your capable hands. I'll be glad to help when I return, if you haven't solved it by then.
