PostSubject: Why I Would Quit Smoking Pipes...   Fri Jul 30, 2010 11:50 am

I'm still recovering from DPG's decision to stop smoking the pipe. I tried to list all the possible reasons I could think of for me personally to stop smoking pipes.

The following are listed in order of "possible" reasons I might stop, from the most likely to the least likely. I must say that only the first 5 reasons would have a chance in my thinking at this point in my life.

Give it some thought and hopefully you can "cut and paste" this and re-arrange for your responses.

1. Lost the interest & donít enjoy it
2. Institutionalized Ėprison/nursing home where it is forbidden
3. Illness when itís impossible
4. Cost
5. Family concerns
6. I have become a health fanatic
7. Smokey smells on clothes and in vehicle
8. Time consuming
9. Fewer places to smoke
10. Social stigma
11. Religious beliefs
12. Other

I would include 1-6 in the exact order you posted them I think, but 7-12 I would not consider as possibilities or viable reasons for me to give it up. # 6 is even iffy for me personally. Definately a good reason to give up ciggies (still tryin'), not sure about the pipe.

I sometimes go a month or two without smoking my pipes but my interest in them never goes away. I still like looking over my small cellar or messing around with my pipes even if I'm not smoking them. My erratic smoking pattern has stopped me from going PAD/TAD crazy like I was in the beginning though.

(1) my interests historically have 'waxed' and 'waned' over the years, and thats okay

(2)having seen the current health care options, i honesty would prefer to punch my ticket before going to a home. (poor care and say goodbye to any funds you have). in my profession, i have seen a lot of them (nursing homes) i believe the racket is borderline 'criminal'. at a young age, my family still has explicit instructions regarding this matter.

(3) health- im stubborn enough to sneak away from the 02 tank if i have too (especially in the event that ive lost my faculties).

(4) cost- always be prudent and keep things in check within your means.

(5) family concerns- yep, over-ruled.

(6) health fanatic- likely not, im always busy and will never live a sedentary lifestyle. besides, i eat a lot of cholesterol free venison. as with all things in life Moderation is a good thing.

1-6 cover it for me, none of the others would sway me.

And If I were to put pipes down I would hang on tight to my cellar, as a 10 year hiatus would only assist it...

Why would I quit? To paraphrase another thought...when they pry my cold fingers off the stem.

Well, I've quit and restarted several times. Some of the pipeless spells have lasted years. They were due to loss of interest, mostly. Right now I'm going over a semi-dry spell, smoking about one or two pipes a week due to other interests having taken over the time to devote to the pipe.

Once I stopped when living in an apartment without a good outside area. I simply will not smoke inside.

Short of death, I don't see myself quitting.

Every so often people will ask me when I plan to quit smoking. I always reply that my mother did not raise a quitter.

I think Dock's farewell for health concerns has gotten many of us thinking about our pastime. I certainly have been been considering my own motivation since his announcement. I cannot say that I don't worry about the long term heath risks involved. I do. However I enjoy all aspects of the hobby from smoking to collecting and especially the cool people I've gotten to know here in the BoB fellowship.

Anyhow, to answer the question:

I'd stop for:

1. Health/Fear of sickness resulting
2. Don't enjoy it anymore
3. If it got so unreasonably expensive that it was no longer viable
4. If someone in my household were sick and it affected THEIR health or chances at recovery from sickness

Anyhow, the reasons NOT to abound. sooooo.... I'll do it while I enjoy it, health permitting.

Yes, 1-6 for the most part. I hope cost doesn't become a bigger issue. It's what, about .50 cents a bowl for a smoke these days? That already stings a little. Let's hope the regime holds its cookies a little longer on tobacco.

If all my teeth fell out and I could no longer clench the stem, and both my hands came off so I could no longer hold one, and I couldn't find someone to fill, light and hold it for me; then I'd quit. tongue

I would probably only quit if the only blends available were aromatics, although, I once took a year and half break.
