PostSubject: Why I enjoy smoking a pipe   Fri Jul 30, 2010 7:54 pm

While this is a follow up to both DPG's and SP posts, I am interested in finding out what others enjoy about smoking a pipe. Here are some of my thoughts:
1. A time to relax
2. I enjoy watching the smoke
3. Its fun looking at pipes and trying to find the great smoker
4. taking pride in your collection of pipes and tobacco
When I read this list, its seems sort of silly.
Maybe you can add some better reasons.

Pipe tobacco tastes better than cigars.
Also I love the variety of blends.
(Even though I don't smoke aros, there
is still a great variety of flavors.)
I also love the pipes themselves
and all the ritual involved.

Here are some of mine:

1] health reasons
May seem odd, but I find smoking a pipe reduces my stress level. Although I have smoked pipes since the teen years it has been mixed with smoking cigarettes. I haven't smoked a cigarette since the mid 90's

2] enjoyed exploring various blends

3] although I don't belong to a pipe club, I enjoy the fellowship and friendship on BoB

4] I consider it a hobby and learn something new almost ever week.

I look at the design and craftsmanship of a pipe as art. I look at the blending of fine tobaccos the same way. You can admire a pipe without smoking it but the tobacco, it can't just be observed. So to understand the artisians and appreciate their skills you have to smoke the tobacco via a pipe. When you put two masterpieces together it's triumphful! I look at many things like this. I find satisfaction in collecting knives, some I use others not. Good Whisky, beer, automobiles, firearms, fishing gear and books etc. I think to appreciate the finer things in life you must discover a way to experience them. Life is short, enjoy.

I wax nostalgic about it in my own little world.

I like to think that my grandfather, a pipe smoker whom I never met, would enjoy sitting with me for a smoke.

It makes me take a little time every day or so to sit down for an hour and collect my thoughts and unwind.

I love the taste in my favorite blends. Especially half way through the bowl.

I like to think people look at me and say, "Hey, a pipe smoker. That's pretty cool." I might be wrong there.

The best conversations I have are typically around a campfire with other pipe smokers.

I almost always learn something (for better or worse) from other pipe smokers.

It's one of the few hobbies I have tried and not screwed up somehow. At least not yet.

When my pipe is in my mouth my foot cannot find its way in.

I love ending my day with a pipe...

The smoke drifting from my pipe this evening rose through the air and did not readily dissipate. It swirled, floating gently from me as I watched a trail form some twenty feet before it disappeared. After a little while a gentle breeze carried it away much more quickly. I watched it for a short measure and wished this bowl wouldn't be finished for some time. It was peaceful, quiet. The sun had set some thirty minutes before and my favorite time of day was quickly ending. Nothing broke the silence. The only thing that caused this pleasure to end was the darkness of night approaching much faster than I had feared it would. And before I knew it I was once again busying myself with life's little worries. I ambled back inside, thinking of another time to come where I will find myself in peace, the smoke wandering far from me.

1. Moments of quiet contemplation enhanced by the gentle caress of the tobacco smoke
2. It brings back memories of a simpler, less frenetic time in my youth
3. It causes me to look ahead to a time when I'm retired and have more time to sit and fully enjoy my pipe
4. The endless variety of tobaccos to try
5. The beauty of the pipes themselves
6. The ritual. Same reason I prefer tea to coffee.
