...to borrow the phrase Tom Dunn used to note the passing of a "brother of the briar", the pipe smoking community has lost a friend. Michael McIntosh, noted outdoors writer, passed away over the weekend; he was 66. Those of you who know his writing (he is counted among the best on guns and shooting) will know that he was also an ambassador of the pipe. Seldom photographed without one, Michael was always willing to discuss pipes, tobaccos or - as you might guess from his last name - Scotch whiskies, especially the Islay malts he loved. There is a story that a certain hotel where he often stayed (that had a No Smoking policy) would place "Michael's Chair" outside whenever he came so that he might enjoy his pipe.

Known for his outdoors work, he also was a fine travel and mystery writer; I believe he authored some 29 books in his all too brief career. Godspeed, Michael; you left us far too soon, and we shall miss you.

This is sad indeed. I've enjoyed his writings and books on shotguns and shooting over the years.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy. Other times I let her sleep.

I don't think I have read any of his works, but I hate to hear of the passing of a fellow pipe and gun enthusiast.

My condolences to his family and friends.

To his memory will be a great reason to get outside and enjoy a pipe tonight.
