We just got back from the Philadelphia Folk Fest, it was a blast! This is the 3rd time I have been there and by far was the best. Any other brothers make it down to Fest? I know there are at least a few folk fans here.

Some simply amazing performances...Vienna Teng & Alex Wong were great. The Harlem Blues and Jazz band were amazing...the sax player is 95 years old! Craziness. Taj Mahal got everyone moving. Jeff Tweedy from Wilco was there and did a great set, and then of course the best of all was Richard Thompson who closed out the Festival on Sunday night and brought the house down with an amazing performance. He pretty much put all the other musicians that performed to shame, even though they were almost all great in their own right.

It definately was a great time...well worth the trip, the heat, the rain, the dirt, the stinky hippy smell, crappy camping food, etc etc. It's one of the best festivals around. There's people that have been going there every year since it started in 1962 I think.

Just realized I forgot to mention Chris Smither, who was awesome. Another one of my favorite performances from this year. This was the complete lineup:

Nice! As both a lover of music and a new guitar player (goodness, I thought PAD was bad, I already feel like I have GAS, Guitar Acquisition Syndrome that is lol), what kinda guitar ya playin' in the pic? Any particular playing styles you tend to favor? Lol, sorry, I'm at that point in guitar playing where every time I see a guitar I start asking questions Razz

Sad thing is that while I'm sure there were plenty of pipes there, your cob was probably the only tobacco pipe at the whole event lol.

The acoustic is an Alvarez. Plays well and has a great sound. I also have a Gibson SG electric that I strum at from time to time...couldn't tell you what style of music I like There is probably something I like from any given genre. I spend most of my guitar time working on my own songs...and never finishing them Very Happy

Believe it or not, the cob was not the only tobacco pipe there. Two gentlement in the tent next to our camp were puffin on briars throughout the weekend, and I saw at least 2 more walking around the festival. I guess folk music brings out the pipe smokers too. cheers

The only Rob Dickinson I know was from Catherine Wheel, which from what I remember was not really anything that one would call folk music? They can't have everyone every year ya' know. Laughing
