PostSubject: Hello from Tennessee!!   Sun Sep 12, 2010 12:54 am

Hey all! Found this site through a Google search. There seems to be some good information here. And, I look forward to meeting you guys!

I am 50 years old. And, I've been smoking cigarettes since I was about 12. The last carton of "ready-roll" cigarettes I bought was back when generics were around $25 to $28 per carton. I then started rolling my own. And, when cigarette tobacco jumped to right at $50 per pound, I began using pipe tobacco to make my own cigarettes.

As for making my own cigarettes, I've always used tubes and a hand crank, Top-O-Matic. But, the arthritis in my hands has finally gotten to the point where it is very difficult for me to use my machine anymore. So, I started looking for an alternative to cigarettes.

I remembered trying a pipe back years ago. I didn't care that much for it because of the really bad tongue bite that I got! And, I didn't care for the fact that it seemed that I was having to re-light my pipe every time I wanted a draw. This was back in the time when windows had yet to come out. And, I didn't have a clue as to what the internet was!!

After talking to some buddies and doing a lot of reading on the internet, I decided to give a pipe another chance. So, I bought a "package deal" of some estate pipes on Ebay. In the deal, I got a Molina, Yello Bole, and a Dr. Grabow... all bent... a corn cob with a trashed bit, a straight Dr. Grabow Grand Duke, and a zippered tobacco pouch. I only gave $31.15 for the whole lot. So, I didn't figure I could get hurt too bad!

This time around, I am enjoying the pipe!! I'm getting better and better at smoking a pipe slowly... like it was meant to be smoked!! I'm working hard to learn to become a proper partner in the romantic dance between the pipe, the tobacco, the fire, and the smoker!

My pipes quickly taught me some things. First, thanks to the papers used, cigarettes taste like crap!!! Second, I love the flavor of tobacco by itself!!! Third, my tongue does not like the heat generated by smoking a pipe... even slowly!

Because of all of this and having read that the churchwarden pipes are supposed to smoke so much cooler than other pipes, I headed back to Ebay. There, I purchased a 10 1/2 inch long Italian churchwarden pipe made by Relax. It too is an estate pipe. I've not gotten it yet... should Monday or Tuesday of this next week.

I don't know if I will like the churchwarden or not. But, I'm betting heavily that I will! And, if I do, I'll be hunting for 2 or 3 more!!!

Well, that's enough rambling about me!! You guys will probably learn that I tend to be a bit long winded! And, I apologize in advance!!! Smile

Robert

Welcome Robert .. So much to learn here.. A bunch of good people too.. Smoke dryer tobacco vs damper. Light it good and then tamp it down a bit while puffing right away.. Puff long and slow to keep the pipe cooler and your tongue will get to like your pipe better.. Just joined not long ago but have gleaned that much to start out with..Have fun..

Welcome aboard Smile

I'm a big fan of churchwardens - I think you will be pleased with yours. Also a gourd calabash can be a great weapon against the dreaded tongue bite Smile

WOW!!!

Over the years, I've joined a lot of forums. But, I've never before gotten the reception that you guys have given me here!! I thank you very much!! And, I will do my best to be worthy of your kind, welcoming words!!!

Grandalfpc, I thank you for your positive vote concerning the CW. Wink Since no one had mentioned it, I was beginning to think that I might have made a boo-boo by purchasing it! As I said above... I don't know if I will like it or not. But, I can hardly wait to get it and give it a try!!! Very Happy

I was also glad to hear your input concerning a calabash pipe. I've been eyeing those too! But, from what I've seen so far, they are a bit pricey for someone like me who is on a tight budget. But, I will definitely keep them in mind!

Alright... I posted pics of my pipes. The thread can be found here. I didn't put up any pics of me yet. I don't want to be accused of breaking anyone's computer or making anyone go blind!!! lol!

Once I get my CW in, I might post a pic of me with it! Wink

Jackson??? Then, we don't lack much being neighbors!! Very Happy I live in the small town of McKenzie... actually, I'm about 2 miles outside McKenzie... back toward Milan. If you go up Hwy 45E to Milan, hang a right, and go about 17 or 18 miles, you'd be at the road that I live on!

We don't get to Jackson that much. Lately, we have more than usual. My wife has been having some tests done on her heart. We are waiting for the doc to schedule a heart catheterization at JMCG and let us know when and what time to be there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well. I've had 2 heart attacks... angioplasty plus 2 stents after first one in 1999... 6 bypasses done after second one in 2001! And, I wouldn't want to see my wife go through the pain and recuperation of that mess!!

Maybe we can get together sometime after we find out for sure what is going on with my wife's heart and can get our minds settled down from that. Sound alright with you??

Thank you, guys!!

You know... as far as being a forum member is concerned... I'm still a babe. And, as such, on many of the forums I have belonged to in the past, I would still be being treated as an outsider. But, you guys on this forum have jumped right in and made me feel like a brother... right from the get-go! I am impressed!! I feel honored!!! And, I thank you all!!!! Wink
