| So the Pens dropped one last night. I'm holding to the delusion they just sandbagged so the could finish up the series at home. Yeah...lol..
As for the fighting, there was quite a few dust-ups(none amounted to much) in the Pens/Rangers game last night and the camera wasn't turned away.
In all honestly, I can do without the fighting in hockey. Not that I'm put off by the act of it, quite the contrary. I just don't get, beyond "tradition", what fighting has to do with any competitive sport...outside of boxing or MMA. It just doesn't make sense. A big hit can change the tempo of the game probably moreso than a fight. Fights end up with someone in the P box and slow the game down during the course of the fight. I'd much rather see the hitting within the flow of the game than the fighting which stops all the action. |

| The Penguins will be even better for the loss.
Every team seems to want/need what they call an "enforcer". Mike Grier was Edmonton's enforcer for a few years.
When Wayne Gretzky was traded from Edmonton to the Kings, before he would agreed to the trade, he insisted that Marty McSorley be traded with him. In my estimate, McSorley was nothing more than a "goon". He was as dirty a hockey player I've seen.
Look at the way Crosby has been treated this year. Teams have tried to run him into the ground, thinking they'll slow him down.
The days of "broad street bullies", in Philadephia are legendary.
TAKE A LOOK AT THIS:

Nothing comes close too that today
Watch the movie "Slap Shot" with Paul Newman.
The rules have changed so much there are very few fights compared to years ago. It wasn't unusual to have two or three major penalties for fighting each game accompanied with game misconducts.
I don't enjoy the fighting either, but you are right a nice "clean" hit here and there can motivate any team. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| SP, I do remember some of the earlier days of hockey. As a matter of fact, when I was 7 and beginning to play, I can remember my mother objecting because "all hockey players do is fight". Funny stuff.
You're right, it's changed a bunch and I think it's a good thing. Having a player who's only purpose is to pick and finish fights cracks me up. It wouldn't fly in any other sport, but it's a tradition on the ice. I don't disdain it, I just think it takes away from the game. And more importantly, I think it takes youth away from the game, especially in this touchy-feely atmosphere we're dwelling in these days. Heaven forbid someone touch someone else with the intent to do anything but hug!!!! Parents, for the most part, would rather push their kids towards soccer, stuff their guts with orange slices and capri suns, and be happy about it. It's that misconception of what the game's really about that's hamstrung it to an extent, beyond the strike/lockout season(s), which did a whole other measure of harm to the game.
The rules changes to open up the scoring were awesome, and the shot in the arm the game needed. If they took it one step further and eliminated fighting, I think the'd find more and more new fans gaining interest in the sport, especially among the younger set and they're the ones that matter if the game's going to grow. |

| I'm not a big fan of Don Cherry but he always argues that if you take away the fighting you'll get more stick work like spearing and slashing... yet, they have now introduced some tougher suspensions for that kind of stuff.
What still amazes me is how the equipment has evolved. I remember watching games just be the goalie mask was made popular by Jacques Plante. I believe Craig MacTavish (Edmonton's coach) was the last player to play without a helmut.
Players like Bobby Hull and Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion had such wicked slap shots that it wasn't hard to convince the goalies to follow Plante's lead. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

I ran into my neighbour's wife (across the street & a couple doors down) the other night. He said her husband stays at work nights to watch the games with the boys... he's a diehard Flyers fan... _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |
