| Manny may have crossed the line... in a poll in the Boston Globe, about 54 % don't want him resign-ed as he approaches his option year...
| Quote: | Lobel: Manny fined -- and wasn't happy about it Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff July 18, 2008 10:50 AM According to former WBZ sports director Bob Lobel, Manny Ramirez was fined a six-figure amount. "Manny was fined six figures to go to a charity," Lobel said this morning on sports radio WEEI. "That got [Manny's] attention ... he became a petulant child by being punished. No matter what the crime was, pushing an employee, that was the issue ... he acted out [after they fined him]. They got his attention. He doesn't like to be punished in any way, shape, or form... " Lobel’s strong words didn’t stop there. He went on to allege that there was a perception that in a pinch-hit at bat at Yankee Stadium on July 6 -- more than a week after the incident with McCormick -- Ramirez took three straight called strikes to send a message to the Sox.
"The thing that most people are forgetting and haven't talked about is the strikeout in Yankee Stadium," Lobel said. "The bat on the shoulder for the three pitches from Mariano Rivera. That was a big [expletive] to the Red Sox after the fine. I'm just telling you ... there are things in the front office that are perceived ... I'm saying that there is a strong feeling that that [three-pitch strikeout] was the message to the Red Sox and it's a strong feeling that that's unacceptable ... there's a feeling that he didn't give it his all, let's put it that way ... I'm just saying the front office has not forgotten that moment. It's akin to Nomar sitting on the bench [in a game in which Derek Jeter dove into the stands at Yankee Stadium in 2004]. It's the same thing. It's an at bat that resonated very strongly in the front office."
During the All-Star break, Ramirez told the Boston Herald's Rob Bradford that he would like to stay in Boston after this season, but that if the team doesn't exercise the first of two one-year, $20 million options they have on Manny, he'll play elsewhere.
"To be honest with you, I don't know, I want to stay in Boston, but I want to sit down after the season with ownership and see what my future is going to be in Boston," he said. "If they don't pick it up, I'm a free agent and I'll go play somewhere else."
Ramirez added that holding court with the Sox' executives is important to him because "I want to know what's my situation. I want no more [expletive] where they tell you one thing and behind your back they do another thing. I think I've earned that respect, for a team to sit down with me and tell me this is what we want, this is what we want to do."
Responding to Ramirez's comments via e-mail to Bradford the next day, Sox owner John Henry wrote, "I find remarks that we have been anything other than completely straightforward to be personally offensive. Manny has been a crucial part of two world championships. I do not believe we would have won either without him. He has never played a more important role than he has thus far this year."

You can't defend Manny on these issues. I think he's going to be gone after this season, or, they may be preparing the fans for his departure as the trade deadline approaches. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| Well Edes disputes Lobel's account as well as the players come to Manny's defense in other interviews. However, apparently the Boston radio talk shows are hot on this:
| Quote: | Manny's fine wildly overstated Link|Comments (36) Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 18, 2008 03:46 PM Manny Ramirez was disciplined by the Red Sox in the aftermath of his June 28 altercation in Houston with Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick in an agreement struck among the club, the player and his agent, Scott Boras, and the players' union.
According to industry sources, Ramirez, in addition to apologizing to McCormick, paid a fine of between $10,000 to $15,000, with the money going to an agreed-upon charity. The fine is at the lower end of that range.Reports that Ramirez had been assessed a six-figure fine are not true, and Red Sox officials have not raised the issue that Ramirez's strikeout against Mariano Rivera in a pinch-hit appearance July 6 was in any way related to the discipline administered.
Also, while Ramirez expressed some frustration this week about his contract status, all parties involved have recognized that the Sox do not intend to address the issue of his 2009 and 2010 option years until after the season. The Sox hold $20 million options on Ramirez for each season.
Asked to comment about the reports of the fine, Red Sox chairman Tom Werner e-mailed this: "Having discussed this, our response is that this will continue to be an internal matter.''

| I'm not saying it for any ethical reasons (even though you could make a case for that arguement too) but I do think he's officially worn out his welcome in Boston. I'd like nothing more than to see him in another uniform next year. At some point in the near future he becomes strictly a D.H. As we already have the best in the game with David, he really no longer has a place here. I for one love to see Ells in left and Coco in center. It makes for a fine deffensive outfield.
Thanks Manny. It's been a fun ride but we need to move on now.....

| Inspite of all, Manny is up there in vote by the players:
| Quote: | Who will be MVP of your league?
National League Chase Utley, Phillies 2B 50% Chipper Jones, Braves 3B 28% Lance Berkman, Astros 1B 15% Albert Pujols, Cardinals 1B 2%
American League Josh Hamilton, Rangers OF 74% Manny Ramirez, Red Sox OF 13% Alex Rodriguez, Yankees 3B 5% Carlos Quentin, White Sox OF 3%
FAST FACTS Players couldn't vote for a teammate.... Marlins 2B Dan Uggla tied with Pujols in the NL.... At week's end Hamilton led the majors with 95 RBIs and was third in the AL with 21 homers.... Utley would be the third straight Phillies player to win the NL MVP, following 1B Ryan Howard and SS Jimmy Rollins.... Giants righty Tim Lincecum (11--3) was the only pitcher to get more than one vote.
Based on a survey of 199 AL players and 235 NL players •
|
If Josh Hamilton didn't come out of no-where, Manny would be # 1, as voted by the players in a recent SI poll. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| Everyone seems at Manny...
here's a taste from Dan Shaughnessy this morning in the Boston Globe:
| Quote: | At 4:36 p.m. owners John Henry and Tom Werner were standing behind the batting cage, blissfully unaware their star had bailed yet again. When they learned the hard news, they saw Francona emerge from the dugout.
"We'll go have a conversation," said Werner.
No one was saying much after the meeting.
"No comment," said Henry and Werner.
When Theo Epstein saw this typist approaching, notepad and pen in hand, the general manager put his Blackberry up to his ear.
"Veteran move," said Theo.
Something's got to give. The owners are mad. The manager is frustrated. The GM is frustrated. Teammates are angry. Even with sycophants who excuse everything, Manny may have finally exhausted his reservoir of goodwill. He quit on the team in 2006 and now it looks like he's quitting again. Is that OK with you, Red Sox Nation

This is really, really sad to Red Sox supporters
It could mean this season is down the drain... _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| Remy and his side-kick "It's over between the Red Sox and Manny. Likely he won't be traded before the deadline but he's gone at the end of the year. Question is how he'll behave till the end of the year" (paraphrasing)
Here's a guy with $180 million contract coming to the end. I read today that even the scum agent Scott Boras said Manny has to honour his contract.
I always liked Manny until now... very selfish actions recently and affecting the other players. This is such a disappointment.
They can't trade him for value 'cause of his actions. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| What kind of team are the Red Sox fielding? This is painful to watch.
Hopefully after the trade deadline things will get into focus. As Remy suggests, if Manny is still with the team, how is he going to behave from here on in.
Theo needs to make a blockbuster, a hail mary.
Remy suggests Manny to Green Bay for Farve. That's how bad it is. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| It seems at least possible that a three way deal with the Pirates and the Marlins will get done before the trade deadline today.
I'd be very happy to see Jason Bay in a Sox jersey by Friday night.....

| It's very unreasonable demands in the trade discussions:
wanting more money plus prospects from Bosox.
How about this:
| Quote: | | Olney, on ESPN: "If he's not traded by 4 p.m. today, there's a 1 percent chance that he finishes the year with the Red Sox. This has gotten so ugly," said Olney, referencing Ramirez's recent trade demands and lackadiasical play. |
The telling thing for me is that Manny's team-mates seem to be pretty fed up with Manny and that affects everyone.
They may have to just place him of waivers and release him. |

| | Quote: | Dodgers in play, too Link|Comments (0) Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 31, 2008 02:32 PM Things just got more interesting ... the Dodgers are still in play as well on Manny. Stay tuned, an hour and a half until the deadline.
Red Sox still trying to make it work Link|Comments (0) Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 31, 2008 02:18 PM Less than 2 hours before the trading deadline, the Red Sox were still trying to make this 3-way deal with the Pirates and Marlins work, but as one source said, "They're not going to be stupid about it." At the moment, the deal would require the Red Sox to include prospects as well as Manny Ramirez and the $7 million remaining on his 2008 salary, a price the Sox appear unwilling to pay at this time.
Another industry source said within the last 10 minutes that he thinks talks will go down to the 4 p.m. deadline.
That's all for now ...
Not buying reports that deal is 'dead' Link|Comments (0) Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 31, 2008 02:06 PM Reports are beginning to surface that the three-way deal for Manny Ramirez is dead or close to dead, but I’m not buying it. The same snags exist now that existed this morning, and there’s still time to work them out before the 4 p.m. deadline.
Also, according to a source, Manny is spending the day shopping in Boston, relaxing and waiting like the rest of us. He is anxious to learn where he may be playing Friday.

Yep, Manny should fit right in. One caller to Van Pelt was from LA and she was so excited. She said:
"Everyone's like Manny out here. No one will no the difference"... |

| Actually this is a very SAD DAY for the Red Sox.
As said before, he has always been lovable whacky Manny Being Manny.
Some people liked it. Some didn't.
But he crossed the line... and poisoned management, teammates and fans. I don't know what happened. It may have been his new agent Scott Boras.
I think it's like a "Tough Love" situation. You love the guy but you're inappropriate hurting others (Boston travel guy, affecting a run at the division title, affect your team mates, your coach, manager, owner, and the good will of the Red Sox Nation).
I think it was Colin Cowherd who was talking to someone from football this morning or yesterday morning. He asked: "How do you handle a player whose been behaving like Manny". The football guy said "In football, the players would literally kick his ass and smack him." You can't do that in baseball.
Manny's fortunate to be in Joe Torre's hands. Torre will get the best out of Manny and he might have a good next two months. But with Boston, it was heading for disaster.
