| Manny just knocked another HR off Mussina of the Yanks... I must give credit to the YES announcers who broadcast cast Yankee games. Last night and tonight, they are calling a very enjoyable game... no "rah rah" home team stuff which is refreshing.
Manny "torchures Mussina with the long ball" they say after the inning...
This guy deserves a thread of his own....

| Well he worked hard in the off-season... having a $20 million option by the Red Sox would do that... the same for the following season. Incredible that he's almost been traded at the trade dead-line the last two or three years.
Latest rumour is that the Mets want him. Manny is a NY native.
Besides, he's just a comical, fun guy to watch.

| Yes Paul, Manny is fun to watch but when he stands at the plate after belting a good hit and it doesn't make it over the wall I get a bit riled. Manny be Manny. And it sure was great to see Big Pappy hit that GRAND SLAM last night. |

| Here's what Johnny Damon remembers:
| Quote: | That demeanor can make for some rather funny moments on the baseball field. While Ramirez is a hitting savant, he has had some spacey moments on the basepaths and in the field. Nobody knows this better than Damon.
The night was July 21, 2004, and the place was Fenway Park. David Newhan, then with the Orioles, belted one deep to center field and it took one of those bad bounces off the wall at Fenway. As Damon gathered himself and tried to nail Newhan at third, Ramirez literally made a move that came right out of left field. He dove and cut off Damon's throw before it could get back to the infield. Newhan scooted home with an inside-the-park home run and the Boston dugout was in a state of utter confusion over what they had just witnessed.
"I think I make a pretty strong throw, maybe a one-hopper to third and all of a sudden, I see him come out of nowhere and just dive and I mean ... I would have laughed if the guy hadn't hit an inside the parker," Damon said. "I got the heat for that, needing two cutoff men. I was like, 'Well, I really didn't need Manny there.' It definitely would have one-hopped third."
Four years later, Damon still gets a kick out of being part of one of the most bizarre defensive sequences in baseball history.
"Hopefully, one of these days we can see the overhead of that play and just kind of see how everything converged and happened. It's pretty funny," said Damon.
What did Damon say to Ramirez after the play unfolded?
"I just said, 'Nice catch,'" said Damon.
Just another piece of that all-encompassing three-word phrase known as "Manny being Manny."

A week or so ago, Manny ignored the third base coach and rounded third and, somehow, was safe at home. We had a discussion on the Globe's Sox forum, particularly about Manny watching the ball... my feeling is that if Francona made it a public issue, it would destroy Manny. No doubt, he's had a talking to... more than once privately.

| About Manny's homer tonight against Texas, bottom of 8th:
| Quote: | Instead, Benoit went after Ramirez. He got ahead, 0-1, then put a fastball at the knees and Ramirez crushed it, hitting over the Green Monster, high off a light pole and into the darkness beyond.
"Pretty swing, isn't it," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.
"Good pitch, bad result," Rangers pitching coach Mark Connor said. "It wasn't like it was a hanging changeup. Manny was sitting on it, he swung at it and got it. He's a great hitter."

| And as usual, Manny stands at the plate, admires his long ball and only after seeing it go over the wall proceeds to run the bases. I have a love hate relationship with this guy, but at this point the Red Sox would be much further back in the standings without him. |

| Here is a very positive side of Manny:
| Quote: | BALTIMORE -- There will come a day when Manny Ramirez has a plaque that takes up permanent residence at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. But in the much nearer future, some Ramirez memorabilia to commemorate the star slugger's 500th home run will be on display. The Red Sox have been in touch with the Hall of Fame to let them know that Ramirez has offered up the batting helmet and lineup card used in Saturday's game, when he clubbed his milestone homer against the Baltimore Orioles.
At some point during their next homestand, the Red Sox will have a pregame ceremony to honor Ramirez. The Hall of Fame is expected to be involved.
Ramirez let Red Sox fan Damon Woo -- who caught the ball in the stands -- hang onto his prize overnight. As Woo promised, he gave the ball back to Ramirez on Sunday.
Boston's star slugger plans on auctioning the baseball for the benefit of a Boston-area charity.
|
Manny makes BIG bucks but auctioning the ball for charity, shows something of his heart. Also, the Woo brothers, especially Damon Woo deserves a lot of credit.
Yes Manny is Manny. But, for entertainment value, I think he is worth every penny. Hard worker, funny, lovable, priceless, IMHO.
Every year, he is on the trading block but he's a class act. |

| Yes Paul, You are right on the money when you say that Manny has a big heart, and we'd certainly be at a loss without him. A true talent for sure and it'll be a proud day to see him enter the Hall of Fame. I thought it was an incredible gesture for Damon Woo to actually give the ball back to Manny that could be worth thousands of dollars. Now we all may be able to view that ball someday in Cooperstown along with a photo of Manny. |
