| It's going to be a very interesting season. With Ross Braun now leading the Honda effort, it's likely that Jensen will finally have a car worthy of his driving ability, especially now that traction control has been removed from the cars, and put back into the hands of the drivers. They'll actually have to drive the cars, now, rather than just piloting them.
Last season was actually pretty dull, with respect to the racing. The only thing that was really interesting was the politics going on behind the scenes. Between the fiasco with McLaren and the nonsense between Alonzo and Hamilton, and the FIA, it was quite a soap opera. Maybe '08 will actually show some solid F1 racing.
Too, it'll be fun to see if Ice Man Raikkonnen can keep his cool AND keep his car on the line. He reported after some testing of the new Ferrari that it was "challenging" to drive it. GOOD! That's what F1 should be. _________________ Gregory L. Pease Master of the Universe G. L. | It sure looked challenging last night in qualifying. I mean WOW! The way those guys were sliding around was amazing. Haven't seem much of that in a while. I think getting rid of traction control and engine braking will make for a good thing.
The Honda seemed to have improved a bit. Ended up back in the field. But not at the tail end of it. Long way to go and I suspect that is a given.
Kimi is starting 16th after a fuel pressure problem stopped him on-track.
Lewis in the McLaren up front and the BMW's mixing it up, up front real well. Looks like BMW are looking for a win this year.
Williams looks improved. As does Toyota. See what happens with developments as the season progresses.
Renault is suffering.
Only Mark Webber having a mechanical off in qualifying, due to brakes exploding apparently. _________________

| Wow! What a season opener. Being out front sure made it look easy for Lewis Hamilton. Podiums for Williams and BMW. Potential from Honda was apparent, and a disaster averted in Honda pits. Too bad for Ruben's on ignoring the red light. Alonzo kind of survived the day to be middle of the pack in points.
Going to be an interesting season.
Malaysia next weekend. _________________

The lolipop man really screwed the pooch. It's highly likely that the chaos resulting from the fuel unit was wrenched from the side of the car distracted Reubens a bit, causing him to miss the red. Normally, it could have been a DQ for that, but the stewards probably took everything into account, and they only assessed a 10 second pit pentalty. Not nearly as bad as a DQ.
I taped the race, so I've only seen the last third live. I need to go back to see what happened to all those who were out of the race by the time I turned on the tele.
Yes. It's going to be an interesting season. Renault better get on their game if they don't want to finish in the middle. Ditto Ferrari, whose performance was pretty poor, but they started last year out badly, too. Maybe Kimi spent too much time at the discoteques during the week.

| About Kimi. Apparently they claim it was an engine problem with Kimi. But he does have the reputation.
Ruben's was DQ'ed after the race. He finished in 6th and the stewards took it away after the race. I really thought they were going to let it slide with just the 10 sec penalty. But no such luck. Could have been a major disaster or some severe injuries, but no mention in the latest news about any. I see some members of the crew limping and fuel all over the place. His DQ gave Kimi a point even though he didn't finish the race. I wondered if Ruben's was trying to figure out what happened behind him and wasn't looking at the light.
Lack of Traction Control and the electronic assist Engine Braking really made for a noticeable change. They explained the engine braking thing. Apparently teams were enhancing the engine braking in the past with electronic sub-routines. Now they have simple engine braking. _________________

| Hi-tech gocarts with 2.4 liter V8's that turn 19,000rpm and make well over 800hp. They accelerate and brake like no stock car can match. The FIA is meddling with standardization, but there is still a lot of differences between these vehicles. Average track speeds were over 140mph at Melbourne with speeds in the trap over 199 mph. Oh, F1 races in the rain also. _________________

| LOL.. Was just raggin on ya, I gave up on NASCAR completely with this 'Car of Tommorow' bull.
I used to watch Al Unser and later Al Unser Jr race the openwheel stuff, but I have no idea what series it was. |

| That was Indy cars. Open wheeled cars to go in circles. Traditional Memorial Day racing.
Some of the locals are unhappy with this car of tomorrow and car of today nonsense. They don't understand just how many years these cars have been almost alike. It's more about the cheating, penalties, and made-for-tv personalities today.
F1 does have some of this standardization going on. Right now it's electronic control units and tires. But at least there is a couple different tires at each race. _________________

| Personally, I don't believe Reubens deserved a DQ. He ran the red, but HE didn't raise the lolipop. It was pretty clear that the whole fiasco was the chief mechanic's fault for letting the car go early. I can well understand losing a fraction of a second's attention on the traffic light, given that something pretty dramatic had just happened to the right side of the car. I suspect I'd be looking back, too.
There was noticably more sliding compared with last year. This is a good thing. F1 had become a technology race, and was getting close to the point where the drivers could have been replaced with expert systems. Some parts of last season almost looked like more like computer simulations than actual races. The team strategy was all important, and the driver's job was to keep the car on the tarmac. It got pretty boring, frankly.
Notice, too, that the kerbs are not being driven over with such rash abandon this year. Without traction control, the cars actually exhibit the effects of lateral forces, now, so keeping all four on the ground is more important, since the computers aren't keeping the wheels spinning the right speed for the driver. _________________ Gregory L. | Qualifying for the Malaysia Grand Prix starts tonight. Or early morning. Race tomorrow night.
Storylines include the possibility that Red Bull may not be allowed to race. They may have lightened their suspension components to a dangerous level. _________________

| Red Bull allowed to qualify.
Ferrari locks out the front row. I wonder how light on fuel they are.
McLaren drivers called before the stewards for possible blocking in the final seconds of qualifying. Basically, for those drivers in Q3 that have completed their runs, they practically idle back to the pits. All of them do it to save fuel for the race. But staying off the racing line isn't always easy. Especially since in this form of racing, the track will have both left and right turns.
I think the race starts at 2:30am Eastern. If you want to see it live.
