| | Ted Williams was 38 when he won his last batting title. Has anybody ever won a title when he was older than 38? |

| I believe that some rookies won batting titles, maybe even a triple crown. Will have to do some research.
Without looking up the records, which batter since Ted Williams has come closest to hitting 400 for the year? |

| Gwynn is correct---394; George Brett---390. I would take Brett as the better player.
As for youngest, Cobb and ARod were both 20 when they won the batting title the first time. Joe Jackson and one of the Waners were 21. williams was only 22 when he hit 406.
Next----Did any rookie ever win the triple crown? Bonus question---how many players won the triple crown and did not get MVP that same year? Amazing in that the winners did not have stats anywhere close, but one time a pitcher won MVP. In other years the MVP had inferior stats to one or more players--no rhyme or reason. |

| Al Kaline was a day younger than Cobb.
I almost put down Brett but Gwynn seemed to always be ahead of others for a number of years.
Triple crown... I just remember Yaz's... let me "research it". But I would guess Mantle.
Here's a question: Baltimore had four 20 game winners in the same year, name them... I was laying in bed last night trying to recall... I could only name 3...?

| In 47 Williams won the Triple Crown but not the MVP. Same for Gehrig in 34. Must have been a lot of favortism in those days. In 33 Klein won it but MVP went to a good pitcher. In 41 Williams bested Dimaggio in all but RBI by 5, hit 406, but did not get the MVP. That was caused by spite from a Boston sports writer.
1971--Palmer, Quellar, McNally, Dobson. |

| ahhh Dobson
Talking about 1971... that was Denny McLean's last season (and he spent that year with Washington)
As everyone knows three years ealier in 1968, Denny was the last pitcher to post 30 wins (actually 31). He started an amazing 41 games, by today's standards with "pitch counts", etc.
Then in 1971 he loses 22 games !! going 10-22...
I don't know the answer to this question and couldn't find it.
What is the Modern Day record for losses in a season by a pitcher? 22 must be close. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| In the modern era, beginning with 1903, the season high for losses is 29. There dozens of pitchers who have lost 19 or more games in one season, including hall of famers and guys who won 300 games or more. I was struck by Early Wynn losing 19 the year that Cleveland won the Series. He must have felt very crappy to be a loser on a team of winners.
For most games won in the modern era, Jack Chesbro had 41 and lost the pennant on the last game of the season with a wild pitch. Ed Walsh won 40 but the rest of his career was mediocre. Ironically, neither won 200 games as their careers lasted 11 and 13 years respectively. |

| Tigers swept the series in Yankee Stadium by winning tonight.
Without looking, when was the last time the Tigers swept a series at Yankee Stadium... to make it easier, which decade was it? 2000's 1990's 1980's 1970's 1960's 1950's 1940's 1930's

| | I will guess the 1980's because I think that is the last time they went to the Series under Sparky Anderson. |

| It was 1966... the disclaimer is that they are in a different division and don't play each other often... but that is something. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |

| | I remember when the Indians took 4 straight from the Yankees in Cleveland. I went to the game on Saturday and saw the first game of the Sunday double header on tv. Mantle hit a pinch hit homer in the top of the 9th and a weak hitting second baseman for the Tribe hit one in the bottom of the ninth. That was in the old Municipal Stadium about 1962 and the average attendance for the 4 game series was over 70,000. Tribe fans hate the Yankees most. So congrats to the Tigers and I hope Cleveland gets back in the groove soon to give them and the Sox a competitive battle this year. |

| That would have been exciting.
Strange ending between the Blue Jays & Bosox tonight (watched on TV) (Other game on MLB Internet tv)
Bottom of the ninth 2 out's... Blue Jays ahead 3-0. Moss walks... Crisp hit's lazy fly ball to centre - caught... They show the Blue Jay dugout celebrating the win.. So I switch channels... a few minutes later I come across the game again.. Crisp is at the plate and hits a single & Lowrie is coming up with two on & Varitek on deck... Lowrie struck out.
I didn't know what was going on? Here's what happened: the second base ump called a bulk on the pitcher "before" Crisp flied out. The Blue Jays celebrate and don't realize what happened. Blue Jay manager so mad he's tossed out of the game... but it ended in the Blue Jays favour.
Strange... _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixcqHFm-H8 |
