Michael Jordan actually quit basketball to play for the White Sox, mostly in the minors, then finished his basketball career. I guess he did not play both sports during the same year. My error. Deion James played for the Atlanta Falcons and the Cinci Reds during the same years, then gave up the Reds after a couple years. I think he played both games on the same day once.

In the 50's Gene Connerly was a 6'8" pitcher for the Red Sox and a pro basketball team. In the 60's Terry Dischinger (sp) played both baseball and basketball briefly. Way back in the 10's and 20's Jim Thorpe played both football and baseball but I do not know if during the same year. He was much better in football as confirmed by Knute Rockne who played against him when the equipment was little and thin. Thorpe would knock him down while running instead of Rockne tackling him, and he gave pain.

Speaking of knuckleball pitchers, there are two things unusual about Hoyt Wilhelm and his catcher Clint Courtney (Orioles). Maybe you might know about them--both about baseball.

Neon Deion, I *think*, is the only dude to hit a homerun and score a touchdown in the same week. I also *think* that the touchdown came on either a kick return or punt return, so that may be the distinction. Bo Knows may have done it as well, but I can't recall clearly. Maybe I'll wiki it.

When I was stationed at Scott AFB in 1966,we used to be able to get free
admission to the Cardinals games if we were in uniform. That was a big deal
when you were making 98$ a month.Always grateful to Mr.Busch for that.
And by the way,I remember Courtney set some kind of a pinch hitting record
when he played for the White Sox around 1960 or so.
Jimmy Piersall once came out of the clubhouse at Comiskey Park between games of a doubleheader to buy a hot dog,he was only wearing a jock strap. jocolor

Courtney used the first oversized Mitt to catch Hoyt. BTW, Courtney was the first catcher to catch while wearing glasses and Hoyt was awarded a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge.

Winslow, that's a funny experience with Piersall Laughing .

There are lots of interesting trivia things out there.

Can't find the pinch hit record for Courtney...

When Piersall was an announcer along with Harry Carey in the 70's he was
hilarious without trying. There was a Jimmy Piersall fan club,a bunch of drunks
who used to wear those arrows that look like they went in your head and revolving
lights on helmets, they used to parade around the stands during the game.God!We
used to get a box seat for 4$ and 2$ general admission in those days.
Wilbur Wood was our knuckleballer and he had a good one,I sat behind home plate
one time when he was pitching and the break on his ball was phenominal.
