It's way too early to many assessments as to how teams are doing but here is a thread to look at some possible Rookie of the Year candidates in both leagues as the season progresses.

Jacoby Ellsbury of the Sox had an amazing game tonight. After a slow start, he's hitting. He is displaying amazing speed. Tonight he banged out two home runs for a season total of 3. I don't think he's been caught stealing yet. Changes the dynamics of the Boston offense.

(Lowrie will follow as a candidate in 2009 Wink . )

What other youngsters are you folks observing??

I am only following the Angels and the Tribe. Will have to pay more attention to Baseball Tonight on ESPN.

What are the Yankees going to do with their phenom rookie pitchers they wouldn't trade for Santana?

Hughes -- 6 game starts 22 Innings 9:00 ERA
Kennedy 4 starts (1 other appearance) 19 Innings 8.53 ERA

At what point does this have a reverse damage on these kids?

I don't mind the Yankees losing but it's a shame these youngsters have so much pressure.

Tonight, looks like Yanks ackwardly try to deal with Phil Hughes, from a Yankee fan on a forum:

Quote:

Seriouisly, do you think he is injured? = )

Even the guys were saying it on TV.

This is just a way to keep him with the team and work with the pitching coach.

Here...read this

UPDATE, 9:01 p.m.: The Yankees just announced that Phil Hughes has a strained right oblique and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. So much for “he’s in the rotation right now.” Why the Yankees work like that, I have no idea. But this allows Hughes to chill out and get some work in without being demoted.

At any rate, they’ll need a starter for Sunday. Likely Darrell Rasner.

UPDATE, 9:16 p.m.: For the record, Girardi said Hughes was healthy when asked before the game. I guess Hughes got hurt while sitting on the bench.

UPDATE, 10:24 p.m.: Girardi now says that Hughes told them he was hurt yesterday. But this afternoon, when asked, he said Hughes was healthy.

Remember that "pink eye" that wilson betemiet had a few weeks ago?

LMAO

He has been out for more than 15 days with a pink eye...he should had his eye removed by now if it was this bad = )

Looks like Hughes will be out for several weeks...

I watched Kennedy pitch tonight... he was "yanked", no pun intended, in the top of the 5th, going 4 2/3 innings.

I think the Yanks should get them both out of the starting rotation.

(Yes, Bobby Abrieu is afraid to go to the wall. On yet another ball hit to wall, he had no clue where the wall was. Actually, I think it was twice tonight)

April's selections:

Quote:
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto was named National League Rookie of the Month for April.

The backstop recorded a .341 average (29-for-85) with five home runs and 20 RBI in 23 games for Chicago, which had a 17-10 record at month's end.

Soto's highlights include a pair of 4-for-5 performances at the plate and a multi-home run, six-RBI effort on April 30 against Milwaukee.

Teammate and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens and Cardinals reliever Kyle McClellan were among those receiving votes for the honor.

Quote:
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Texas Rangers outfielder David Murphy was named the American League Rookie of the Month for April.

In 27 games last month, the 26-year-old Murphy batted .277 with two home runs and 14 runs batted in.

The 17th overall choice in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft by Boston, Murphy scored 15 runs, collected 14 extra-base hits and had 10 multi-hit performances.

The Baylor product finished the month by notching at least one RBI in six straight games.

Here are the impressive performances of May's rookies:

Quote:
Laffey gave the Cleveland pitching staff a big boost in May by posting an 0.79 ERA over 34 innings. Laffey went 3-2 for the month and opponents hit just .220 against him during that span.

Ellsbury has been making major contributions for the Red Sox, as they attempt to repeat as World Series champions. Playing multiple outfield positions, Ellsbury hit .281 in May and had 21 runs scored, 27 hits, one homer and 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts.

Murphy followed his April Rookie of the Month honor by helping the resurgent Rangers enjoy a big May. In 118 at-bats during the month, Murphy hit .280 with 33 runs scored, four homers, eight doubles and 21 runs batted in.

Longoria has been a consistent force for the upstart Rays, who have burst into prominence in the AL East. In 107 at-bats during May, Longoria hit .234 with 25 hits, four homers, six doubles and 18 runs batted in.

The NL quartet of candidates also posted some impressive numbers in MLB's second month.

DeWitt has been an infield stabilizer for the Dodgers as they attempt to catch Arizona in the NL West race. He had 87 at-bats in May and finished the month with a .322 average, 14 runs scored, 28 hits, five homers and 18 RBIs.

Votto's performance for the month was punctuated by one special day against the Cubs. On May 7, Votto hit three home runs. He hit .281 for the month with 14 runs scored, 25 hits, six homers and 16 RBIs.

Soto has helped the Cubs surge to the top of the NL Central with his defensive work behind at the plate and timely offensive contributions. He hit .271 in 96 at-bats in May and had 26 hits, 11 doubles, four homers and 18 RBIs.

Acosta came out of the Atlanta bullpen to post a 1.80 ERA in May. He was 3-1 with one save and had 12 strikeouts and just one walk in 15 innings
