I must respond in ways that makes people think I'm mad or something, thats twice I've been told that within 24 hrs.

Not at all. At least I don't think so. I just felt like saying something nice about McClelland, that's all. I knew you were commenting with tongue in cheek. Keep it up, please. Smile

You're right about the lack of voice tone and body language. I'm always getting myself in trouble this way. Doesn't stop me from typing though.

You can't beat expressive "eyes" though, for communication. Laughing

it happens to me all the time. a lot of ppl site my avatar as one of the reasons... how ppl are scared of a 100x100 pixel photo, i don't know.
a couple of buddies are always joking with me about it.

PM received, ken, and replied to.

btw, here's the post i was referring to, quoting a friend (joe) who was doing the behind the scenes work for getting our "forum blend" put together.
this was posted Jan 25th.

Figured i'd post a long, rambling, disjointed post about my talk with Mike McN today, who owns MCClellands pipe tobacco co. I've actually been talking to Mike fairly regularly over the course of the last year because of the CS blend we have in the works. Yep, we had this idea going this time last year! Thankfully it seems like most people here figured Greg was spearheading the whole shebang, which has saved me from the countless 'WHERE IS IT PMs!?" he's been gettin Very Happy

Normally we talk about the same standard things. How's it going, how's business, how's life, how's your wife, etc etc. I also normally get a story about Barry Levin thrown in there. We chat and we bs, Mike is a very old school guy. I've learned much in the year or so we've been communicating.

Today was different however. He shared a couple of things with me that I thought i'd pass along. I asked if I could first of course, didn't want to give away any of his upcoming ideas without his permission. He gave me the thumbs up (he actually lurks here and checks in from time to time in case you guys didn't know) so here I go!

First off, and most interesting (imho of course) was that Mike stated that 2007 was the best year he ever had. Mind you he started back in 1973, a time when pipe smoking and smoking in general was much more common than it is now (and wasn't a damn crime!). But yea, he's sold more pipe tobacco last year than he ever did before. I asked what did it, and he felt like part of it was a decline in competition as well as the popularity of his new Oriental blends. Apparently those blends blew the doors off the sales records of all his other blends. Rightly so too, they are all pretty damn good. He tells me Highlander is the best seller of the bunch because of the latakia he puts in it. I just found it rather eye opening that he did so well, most of the time all I hear is the decline of pipe smoking. And yet here we have someone who is doing better than ever. Weird eh?

More Orinetals are coming as well .Within the next two weeks or so Mike is realeasing two more new Oriental blends, one of which (the smyrna I believe) will have a whole leaf on top as part of the presentation. He's working on mixing the various Orientals for some new combinations. Yenije and Smyrna, Yenije and Katerini, it all sounds good. He'll also be releasing some of the current blends, but with latakia added in like the Highlander (wouldn't tell me if it was Syrian leaf or not).

Then of course we have our own CS blend which is tinned and just waiting for the labels. It's been a long process but we're really almost there. As soon as he's done with his two new releases he said he'll finish our little project. I'll post more details about that once I have em. Patience gorillas, we're almost done Smile

Also in the pike, Mike's got a ton of old John Cotton tobaccos that he loves. He's thinking about taking apart a few tins, breaking down the ingredients, and making his own version of a couple of them (I told him he better damn well do #2!). Interesting stuff indeed, eh?

After the Cotton's stuff and the Orientals he told me he really didn't know what to do. He said he's done everything he's wanted too really. Now here is where I plant my flag :tu. I told him he should do some retro blends of some of the things he's made over the years that are no longer available. He liked the idea and said he'd thought about it some, so we may indeed see old McClellands made blends reincarnated.

I also asked him why he doesn't make a dedicated burly blend. Most surprisingly he tells me that it's because he isn't happy with the quality of the burley leaf available right now. He goes on to tell me that the Kentucky burley he used to get when he first started off was the shit, and what we have doesn't come close tastewise. So I say, why not make a good all fashioned american burley blend as your swan song? I mean, hell, you found all those rare orientals, i'm sure you could get some kick ass burley. Yea, I bet I could he says. He thinks it's a pretty good idea actually, so who knows, in the future if we start seeing some older discontinued blends come back and a new McClellands burley blend you can all look back at this post and thank me for planting the seeds for the ideas Very Happy

Don't say I didn't warn yens, this damn post was of blog like proportions :r

figured i'd pass that along and keep this post offtopic (sorry, ken, but it's generating some views for you).
